How do you define "OK"? Sure it's almost trivial to to measure RDSon. But there are other characteristics such as the VGS breakdown voltage that I doubt you can measure without destroying the part. Honestly, it boggles my mind that people will buy sketchy parts off fleaBay to save what, half the cost of a pack of smokes?

This is the first time I used a mosfet in a mod. My soldering skills are not very developed yet. I am getting better at it though. I wasn't sure if I could solder a mosfet without frying it. Not to mention I read that static electricity can fry them also. It's winter here and the air is very dry. Sure, to you burning up a few 4-5 dollar chips means nothing but some of us don't have a lot of money. Thanks for your input though, not!

Hi guys

I just wanted to stop in and say Hi. I discovered this thread yesterday while researching a new switch design for the BF mod I am working on.

Yes, it is a shameless copy of Pdibs mod with some alterations... but I have no intentions of selling them... so I figure it is OK.

I was hoping to use a Reo style firing pin as the switch, because I picked up some 1/4" wide berrylium copper strip, but that just didn't work out. so a few trips to the local hardware store and I managed to put together a little mechanical push button switch that feels good. I was able to verify that I didn't have any v drop between the battery and 510 through the switch, so I guess that is good.

The switch consists of a .45 auto shell casing, a brass knurled nut, brass screw for battery contact and a spring. Unfortunately I had to live with a music wire spring so I will have to see how that holds up. If anyone has ideas on a different spring material Im all ears.

I used a FDV V3 with a vented screw (yes, it can be done, but you have to mod the brass end cap that holds the spring pin in). I tried to open the vent in the screw to 1/16 but sadly my cheapo drill bits kept snapping when I tried to drill it. If it doesn't feed well enough with the .040 vent I will have to take it in to work and have one of my machinists open it up for me.

The body of the Mod is made from Corian. It should look pretty sparkly after sanding and buffing.

Sorry for the teaser. I just wanted to drop in and say thanks for all the inspiration. Ill post pics when its done... it is taking WAY longer than anticipated!

Thanks
Geo

Hey Geo and welcome

I'm guilty of committing the same bit of cloning you're doing I'm afraid. As for the switch I initially used a mech switch from a GG but then made my own mech switch. Here are some pics

Why did you swap out the GG switch?...I've had a couple GG's in the past, thought the switches weren't too bad?

It works great but I wanted to have a wooden button. I still haven't swapped them out though because I'm busy with that other one I'm doing which is giving me major headaches.
I winged it on this new one I'm doing instead of doing first a Sketchup drawing and I made it just a bit too small for what it's supposed to take inside. Today after finishing wiring and waterproofing the 510 and making a positive contact plate for the battery I came to the realisation that there is no way in hell am I gonna fit inside the wiring of the DNA. In order to use the right gauge wire for the battery I simply need more space which I don't have so I threw in the towel and I'm making it a mech.
I need to make another one slightly taller and wider for the DNA because this one is just too small. I should have it finished tomorrow so I'll post some pics next to a Grand and you'll see that it's actually almost the same size and considering it's got a 16ml bottle it's understandable I can't get everything in.
I'll get the new one drawn up in Sketchup first because I suspect that I can perhaps get away with just making it slightly wider only.
As I don't have any door on this mod it's a major PITA to get the wiring routed but I'll tell you it's one hell of a nice design and it sits in the hand like it's meant to be there. The air channel around the atty works great and I vaped it for about 20 min with no condensation at all building up inside.
I'm certainly gonna make another one for the DNA next

That sucks on the fail on what you were gunning for, glad you can pull it out of the fire (though making it a mech isn't exactly a fail to me...regs. are for little girls who can't coil :p)

Curious how you did the bottom...I'm working on the design of a bottom door mod now and I'm really trying to avoid as few press/friction connections as I can.

Hi guys, I've been lurking around this thread for some time and finally subscribed today. I just want to say, you guys do great work. I have picked up so many ideas here and can't wait to get started myself. Santa was good to me this year, but his shipping sucks. I picked up this little beauty for under $500.00 with shipping and tax included. It's scheduled to arrive next week, so hopefully I'll have something to show soon.

Two-Speed Variable Bench Mill/Drill Machine 44991 1 $549.99
