In fact I had some more thought on how not to have any sort of bottom plate and I found the best solution. I'll make a ring (more like a short tube about 1/4in long) at the same diameter as the battery hole to which I'll solder the contact and I'll thead the inner part of it and I'll turn on the lathe a cap with threading on the outside which screws into the end of the ring and compresses the battery with a spring. Just like a tube mod really only you won't be able to see the tube because it will be embedded in the mod and only the cap will be visible underneath.
This way I can make it with no door and no bottom plate at all.

Hey Cpt, first off, let me tell you, I wish my failures would look half good as yours :) The tube is a good idea, the slug mode had such an inner tube around the battery Slug Style 18650 Mechanical Box Mod Copper By Shenxi

Ya know, I ventured into tube mods for a bit (I loved those RSST's) and bought several of those full brass sigelei 19E's (they were so cheap and at the same time, pretty awesome from a conductivity perspective with a few mods), since then I've been scavenging from that bone yard for a long time...that's actually a brilliant idea...epoxy in a chunk of the brass threaded tele tube with a neg line soldered on and make up a sprung threaded plug (dremmel in a coin slot)...and just leave the bottle hole open bottomed...I likes :toast:

See...this is why I like this place....

Ok here is the biggest PITA I've ever come across. Sadly the only way I could get this finished and functioning correctly is by adding a piece at the bottom to house a battery compression spring. I now know how to fix this problem on the next one but sadly I couldn't do it here without breaking the mod. On the next one I'll make a spring loaded positive pole for the battery which will solve this problem.

I'll admit to you I reached a point where I was seconds away from tossing this thing out the window and if there's anything I've learned from this experience it's that I need to plan much better how much space I need to fit what I intend in a mod. In this case winging it was a big fail.

More than likely I'll scrap this after I make the next one because I simply hate the fact that it has that extra bottom plate which wasn't my intention from the start.

You can scrap it in the mail box addressed to me whenever you're ready Capt'
I wouldn't want you having it around reminding you of what an epic fail this was :D
I like the added plate.

some great stuff going on here guys! Custom...freakin awesome clean job you did on REO VV!
Hope everyone is having a nice holiday break, and Happy New Year!

Cool link, never seen that mod before...that's the kind of thing that drives me nuts...with that price point (even bump it to $70 for a bf version) we would probably all have one of those (and modding the crap out of it)...but nope, completely disregard bf's...and make yet another "dripper" to join the army of drippers already out there...

CaptSteve it looks awesome with the aluminum band on the bottom. Did you install the chip? I like how you adapted to the situation and were able to make it work and look fantastic.

This is one of those that only you will see the problem and I know that feeling. That is what has kept me from even starting. I am at the point now where I have over thought the thing to the point of annoyance.

one day I come up with an idea, the next day I realize why that idea won't work, and so on, and so on. I've got three designs on the table and they've all turned my brain to jello trying to envision all potential problems before I start cutting.

This one is a clone, and cloners ... well they clone, now the original was sold $250.00 + so, why bother whith a BF when a straight mecanical brings that much money! I think BFs are not profitable enough in the vape market, hopefully, it will stabilize ... one of this days.
The good thing is that this lack of BFs on the market is giving us the drive to build our own, right? :)

River there's a very fine line between planning and over planning, at some point you just gotta pull the trigger bud. Heck just go for it

speaking of that extra piece on the bottom...

how easy would it be to mill a DNA board into that thing?

It's impossible to put it simply. The base plate is small and half of it is milled out to take the battery spring so you have enough space to squeeze a pea in there if you're lucky.

That is really nice...many times I've taken a chunk of Corian off the end-cuts rack at a local plastics shop and thought about it...had they had that blue marbled mat. you got I would've pulled the trigger (they had solid black, gray and white...for lab counters )

What's it like to machine? does it get melty like plexy or is it more like a lexan?

Long time lurker too with a first bottom feeder project to be started soon.
Dogz, I was following your post, I was planning on using the same hardware you ordered to built your squonker, how did that end up?

Sorry to say it's still on my desk. When I started looking for options to seal the chipset. I hit a snag and couldn't come up with anything that I felt good about. So I shelved it, for now. When I get my mill up and running I plan to make a chip holder that will be sealed and get that puppy finished.

Exact machine I gave myself for Christmas, except yours is cooler cause it's red and mine's kinda this industrial green...only issue I've had so far is the "Z" axis or up/down. It tends to self lower unless you lock it (which of course I always forget at the most critical time )...seems tightening up the gib screws just that micro turn more then makes it grabby...maybe just a characteristic of mine but something to watch for...when you can recover some cash...the DP vice is an awesome add (way faster than bolting everything down) but don't do what I did...spend a bit more and get the pivot vice...

Enjoy...it makes modding fun (I spend more time just milling crap for the sake of milling crap :D)

...forgot, pics or it didn't happen...

I like your setup. What size vise is that ? I ordered a 3" with a rotating base, I hope it fits my machine as well as yours.
