OK, I've just about studied myself into never never land now and I think I'm about ready to try my first box mod build.

I would really like to take advantage of a larger mAh battery (or two) on my first attempt. Something like an 18650 or so. My question is, when it comes time to go to Radio Shark, how do I know what box will fit the battery? I figured I'd go ahead and order the battery and get it in hand before purchasing the box so I can test fit it when I get to the store. Is that how you guys do it? Or do you just know the 18650 will fit in a standard AA box (or not)?

hey check out madvapes first lots of parts there then the radioshack idea. I know lots have built the puck first go I know I did it works but not pocket friendly. you can make one for 10.00 bucks or less its the batterys that will get ya. two 14500 batterys running parrel is 1800 mahs great for two days

I did check out Madvapes and saw their boxes. I was going to order batts from them anyway...so I may just do that. So when they say they have a 2AA box, the 14500s will fit that right?

You can estimate the size of the battery well enough to determine if it will fit in a particular box just by the number ;-) For example, a 16340 battery is 16mm in diameter and 34mm long, an 18650 battery is 18mm diameter and 65mm long. However, this is only a rough estimate, some batteries deviate in length by a couple of mm. Many protected batteries are 1 or 2 mm longer due to the protection circuit. Madvapes actually lists the battery dimensions on the batteries they sell

And I know what you mean about "studying yourself into never-never land" . . . I spent two weeks solid reading up about VV builds with different components and my head spun for a few days afterward :p

I've got most of my parts now with the rest on the way, so I'll be joining you in the "first time modder's" club. I'll be carving a custom wood box once I have a good idea exactly what dimensions I'll need inside. I thought about buying something suitable, but figured I might as well go all-out. Hopefully I'm not biting off more than I can chew
