All the copper and micro mods lately got me inspired to do something similar, but a little more exposed.

Features:

  • 3 15mm copper end caps cut shorter + 1 ring from an end cap
  • 3mm brass tubes for spine, 2mm for extra battery support
  • Large hole battery connector, gold, shortened and notched
  • 2AA battery spring straight to center connector, insulated with heat shrink and epoxy putty
  • "Celebrate the Solder" joints
  • 14500 with a 15mm genisis
  • Leftover switch parts
  • CAT5 wire wraps
And some pics:

Plenty of crookedness, but it stands up straight

Thanks everyone, and I'm glad my passive gardening is appreciated too. For anyone interested these are really easy to make, you just need to pre-cut and measure the parts before assembly. I drilled holes for 2 15mm tubes in a piece of wood, but was stuck with alu tubing as I had no wood on hand in that size. That meant the whole frame acted as a heatsink making it harder to braze.

Another pitfall was forgetting that aw imr's are unprotected and thus 2mm shorter. This was made for a protected cell, but luckily it holds the smaller batt too, just needs a longer piece of vinyl tube up under the switch. Also, I can say that the imr's are much more impressive for both LR and booster performance too.

Uh oh.....
Wheels are turning, Hmmm a pill fob that has been milled on the sides would allow a battery to be installed and removed while reducing the need of soldering. Two pieces would be needed one for the atty (left) and one for the battery and switch (Right) By placing the two sides together they could be attached by screws. The milling process would be the bulk of the labor.

What do ya think?

Dan, sure, but the battery wouldn't need such a window if the top unscrews so that you can get it out that way. And the screws require additional clearance inside the fob too. having the switch in a threaded lid would be a nice feature though.

Gitmoe, I've got a butane pencil torch but those 'garden shots' were chosen as that was the best sign of spring I could find-- it's still too cold outside, so I used just a flat tipped soldering iron. I reset the ring by the atty after it was all built and it only heated the top part without damaging the bottom at all. I'm sure there is a more skilled approach but it worked fine. It would be nice to be able to soften the joints for slight adjustments without completely reflowing with a toaster oven or something but that is probably more trouble than it is worth.

Also big thanks to traderdan as his is really close to this too :)

True, but the look is waht I am after, I like the open value and astetics. I was thinking I coul make a touch switch component small enought to mount inside the cap allowing it to be removed for maitenance. Would be easiy to make, I just like the look of an open PV, and the screws can be countersunk and threaded to come flush and not protrude.

Hmmm might make one of these this weekend if I have time, and I could through a 22mm MAP tank in the atty side.

LOL I love collaberation....

I'd love to see it, so you better do it :)

When it is all exposed it is real easy to get to the parts too. Your cut reminds me of shpuvel's OGOGO tank some too, but it would be hard to have the sleeve on the outside with screws too, unless they start on the battery side...

To be named "The Skeletal" :p
