I have a brass nemesis and I'd never polished it before. After a month, it appeared that the engravings were wearing off! I kept it sleeved and had no scratches on it either. My hypothesis was that the tarnishing has filled the gaps of the engravings. I gently polished it yesterday and it didn't get shiny as new, but the engravings still don't show... Am I alone on this? I really dont think they would just rub off, but I could be wrong.

I'm not sure exactly why this might happen, but I can assure you it's not the tarnish. Oxidation on brass is really only a few microns thick (a few layers of molecules), and there's no way that would fill in the engraving.
My guess is the loss of a reflective surface has just made them less noticeable, but that's merely optics.
