Risky business.
Plating is extremely thin and could reveal the copper plated brass it's really made of.
If you decide to risk it, I'd turn it in my hands or on a slow speed drill, touching it lightly with one of those green scotchbrite pads.
That way it will remove a minimum amount of material.
Be careful if using the drill method.
Don't use high speed and don't use a long piece of pad that could get tangled and hurt ya.
