One hopeful thing: Gov Schwarzenegger made the record books last year for vetoing about 35% of bills placed before him (vetoed 415 of 1187 bills) - next highest percent in Calif history was Gov Davis at 25%. So he's shown a very clear willingness to override what the legislature vomits up... He's a centrist whose gubernatorial career is winding up, I can't imagine he's concerned about dancing with the legislature.

As long as someone gets the right message to him, or some key staff member, letting them know that SB400 needs to die... :)

Again, everyone should flood his office. Please.

Please contact Governor Schwarzenegger! <<link!!!

It's easy. All they ask for is your name and email address. Please, let's flood his office with VETO SB 400! Use twitter if you can, simply type @schwarzenegger Please Veto SB 400!

Do you all realize how long it took me to be able to spell Schwarzenegger without cutting and pasting?!!!!!

If this becomes law by default, oh my. What happens in California......

Here's my letter
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
California legislators have sent a bill to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes in your state. Please veto this bill and prevent it from becoming the trend in other states. ASH has pressured your legislators with false information and misleading claims about the use of electronic cigarettes. ASH claims they are being marketed to children with the use of fruity flavors. Governor, I am 60 years old, and I still love fruity flavors. Ironically, the product that ASH peddles as the only answer to smoking alternatives and cessation: Nicorette gum is marketed in fruity flavors, cinnamon surge, and teeth whitening versions. It is clear that Nicorette is marketing to children. ASH receives funding from the drug industry, so it is also clear that they would oppose a product that would threaten profits from a major funder.

Trace amounts of nitrosamines and carcinogens were reportedly found in a limited test among two brands by the FDA. However, nitrosamines are also commonly found in bacon and beer, and trace amounts of carcinogens are commonly found in nicotine replacement products that are approved by the FDA such as nicotine gums and NicoDerm CQ. The FDA did not state how lethal or in what quantities of the diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly used in antifreeze, was present in the samples tested and may mislead the readers to believe that antifreeze is in their e-cig which we know is not the case. It is important to note that the detection of diethylene glycol by the FDA did cause some argument from manufacture since it is not an ingredient used to make their electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes have been unjustly vilified by ASH and by other anti-smoking groups. In one cartridges of 18 tested by the FDA, DEG was found in trace amounts. In testing by an independent lab of other cartridges, no DEG was found. In reality, the same compounds used by the media to demonize the electronic cigarette are also found in all patches and gum touted as a cure-all to smokers looking to quit smoking. I find this the height of hypocrisy and an ill-conceived media blast to halt the sale of e cigarettes and bolster the sale of Nicorette.

Electronic cigarettes are a smoking alternative. E cigs provide the vaper with a way to enjoy nicotine with minimal health risks to the vaper and no risk to the public. Since I started using the e cig in Jan. of 2009, I have cut my consumption of Marlboros from a pack a day for over 40 years to 1 cigarette a day. I enjoy feeling better, but most importantly, I enjoy my right to continue to vape my e cigarette instead of smoking my Marlboros. Should the e cig be banned, I will simply go back to smoking. Please veto this ill-conceived piece of legislation, sponsored by ASH and based upon lies and distortion. Your veto will stop the trend from spreading to other states and will save both the lives and rights of hundreds of thousands of former cigarette smokers who have switched to electronic cigarettes.

I live in California and I do not want to see them ban the e-cig. However, I won't fret over it either. I'll do what I did while living in NYC and cigarettes there were $70.00 a carton. Before I started buying from the Native American sellers in the U.S., I bought my cigarettes from overseas retailers. I never had a problem. Even if there is a national ban on them, overseas sellers will still ship to the U.S. They are shrewd and ship with non-identifibale packaging, and under different comany names. If my analogs got through customs for years, I'm sure my e-cig supplies will also...
I agree that we'll probably be able to get what we need one way or another, but I think it's a mistake to be unconcerned about the legislation. Every anti-ecig law that passes successfully increases the likelihood of similar laws following suit. It's not a pattern we want to see. As restrictive laws are passed, negative publicity and public sentiment are likely to increase, as well.

LOL My best friend moved to the Grass Valley area a few years ago. Thanks, but I don't think I could deal with the degree of Nannyism there. I do, however, believe that CA is a beautiful place.

California is beautiful and many of its residents are wonderful. The legislature is completely out of control and runs amok. We are seeking to make the California legislature part time so the loons can do less damage each year. They write nearly 1000 idiotic pieces of legislature each year. If you could see them in action you would be disgusted that these weasels have managed to grab such power. California is the state of the "Meathead" cigarette tax.

I can only keeping hoping that Arnold keeps vetoing most of their idiocy.

Completely agree, Toots! I am a California native and I love this State, but hate what it has become. Personally, I think that rather than just the "full-time/part-time" idea, I think that we should limit them all to passing "5 bills a year". That's it!

When I started researching how this SB400 happened, I discovered that there is a tobacco lobbying organization called PACT -- The Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing that lobbies legislators and hands out awards to them for passing anti-smoking legislation. So who pays for PACT? We do! They are subsidized by the California Department of Public Health, Tobacco Control Section. PACT is the ACORN of "community organizing" against tobacco -- and against anything that looks like smoking.

That's why we are broke -- agencies like these!

PS I can't post the URL of PACT because I don't yet have 15 posts, but look up "tobacco, California, PACT" research it and be totally disgusted!

Heh.. funny post on the detonator.

I've met Arny in person a few times, hes a stand up guy. I wouldnt be surprised if he never hears/sees this as an e-cig issue until its too late. He probably see's the "green cars" or whatever it was originally and hasnt heard anything since.

Arny would honestly, from what i've known talking to him, be all for e-cigs. He's such a health freak it's insane. (duh..) He'd be the one to endorse this. Problem is emails, mail etc. go through many people before actually reaching anyone with power (such as a governor) because of the amount of threats/hatemail/bombs (not really but its happened)/anthrax/whatever they dont want making it to arny. so he may never see anything anyone sends him o.o

Well there you go! Something you can do! Can you get into see Arny or was this all in passing? Either way... if you could reach out to him, that would be awesome! :)

From all accounts of what we all "know" of him, he seems a reasonable person. A face to face interaction with him (or even by phone) pointing him in the basic direction of good information is going to be what really kills this bill.
