You can re-use the filler. I wash in hot water then squeeze out as much of the water as possible. You can get a few uses out of the stock polyfill filler, but it will start to get gunky. Get yourself some MarineLand Rite Size U blue foam and use that for filler. Cut a wedge shaped piece slightly longer than the cart is deep and the top of the wedge slightly wider than the cart. Fill the cart 3/4 full, put in the blue foam, then top off the cart with a couple of drips, just so the top is slushy but not pooling liquid.

Another thing to try is the HighPing cart mod. Check the Cartridge mod section of the Modders forum for instructions on that.

I tried the Highping method but quickly got tired of messing around with the plug; taking it out and putting it back in again got to be rather messy.

So, I settled on the Blue Foam.
Started out with couple packs of Blue Foam Cartridge Filler from StrictlyEjuice, but quickly determined that buying a pack of Marineland Rite-Size U Bonded Foam Sleeve Aquarium Filter Sleeves was much cheaper and I could tailor-cut them to my own specifications.

Now I can fill my carts by either dripping on the top (you might want to add the straw mod if you do it this way) or use a syringe and fill from the bottom (which is the way I do it). I uses 901 carts which say they hold 0.6ml (don't know if that's with or without filler) and that's exactly what I can put in an empty Blue Foam filled cart.

I gave up on carts a long time ago. Use cartos 100% of the time. But if I did do a cart again, the last thing I would do is Clean Out cart filling.

For 5 Bucks you can get enough Poly or Blue Foam or what ever is the Latest and Greatest thing to last you a Year or more.

BTW - Here was my last go around with cart material.

Worked great but then I tried a carto and Now it all seems those Crazy cart mods seem so Silly.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but could be of interest to you Shell.

Hey ZD! I also made a couple of carts with ss scrubbers. Had the same problem as you with the courseness, and ss wool is only available in huge quantities for industrial apps. I compact mine with a punch into a little plug w/ a dent for the wick that sits on a prop made with ss wire. Works great but takes time to make. Think I'll try yours. With so many variables and unknowns in what we vape, I wanted to limit the unknowns... ss gives me this peace of mind.

The only other mod that I use is Highping's because it's so simple and works...and I only use polyfil since it's polyester...still a ? in this application, but is non carcinogenic and has a long history of consumer use. Here's link:

Both blue foam and fluval are designed specifically for aquariums and I have not/will not recommend them. BF is a polyurethane and I was not able to find the composition of fluval in my research. And emptying out tea to use the plastic PTB is just plain silly imo.

Polyurethanes release cyanide when heated to 500F...yeah, I know, carts don't get that hot, but atties do in the vape chamber and bits of BF could get in there. I for one won't chance it.

In a previous thread regarding BF dangers a poster said he's been using it for 2 months and he's still alive. Well along that reasoning, I been smoking for 45 years and I'm still here...so smoking must be OK too!? If you want to read the discussion in this thread, here's the link:

I drip when I'm home (so no plastics there), but like ZD got hooked on the convenience of cartos (heating coil inside the filler...yikes!) for on the road. The new generation of cartos that eliminate the filling are being tested by some members now...can't wait to see the reviews.

Shell, sorry for this long post. But I do hope it gives you some inforrmation so that you can choose what's best for you. My advise is to avoid BF...but that is strictly my opinion only.
