Just sharing my own experience...
I had be happily using my cartotanks for several months, and watching the commentaries of RBA's from the sideline for quite a while. I was somewhat intimidated by the thought of fiddiling with one, as I like things that work correctly right out of the box. However, I finally decided to try one, an AGA T2. It is a popular and often recommended affordable Genesis-style clone.
I did my homework. I spent hours learning about wrapping wicks from stainless steel mesh and how to wrap a coil from wire. How to oxidize both and do pulse fires. Learned which batteries are recommended. Reinforced my knowledge of resistance and voltage. Learned how to use a multimeter. And I watched a ton of videos.
The video that Zen did for his Z Atty Pro for Provape is probably the one that I learned the most from. If you can find eHuman's blog it has everything you need to know about setting up an AGA.
I had very mixed results with my first couple of attempts. But after some trial and error, I got laugh-out-loud clouds of vapor and purchased a second one. It took a while to find the right flavors to put in mine, as some of my favorites did not taste their best in the AGA. I have found them to be time-consuming and a little fiddly, but when they are working on all cylinders there is nothing better and the two that I now own are used nearly 90% of the time at my house. They can and do occassionally leak if not kept upright, so they are not an ideal out-and-about delivery device. I still use my dependable and consistant cartotanks for that.
If I were you, I'd have at least a couple of dependable cartotanks on hand before diving into a rebuildable, but by all means
do the research and get an affordable RBA to play with.
