The CDC is producing some weird and inconsistent data to back up its claims. They ARE apparently finding teens that are adulterating vape juice or buying black market ejuice which has been adulterated. Apparently well over 100% of their samples in fact. This seems to be the evidence they are using to demand that unadulterated products be stopped.

How is it possible to be well over 100% of their samples? 100% means all of the samples unless I am misunderstanding this.

This is a good question. Various samples may fall into more than one category of course. I’m interested in the absences and inconsistencies in their reported data myself.

The news media is going crazy. A teen in Texas was just hospitalized after taking one hit. They, of course, are focusing on VAPING; not what the kid was vaping. This was one headline that at least told the truth.

https://nypost.com/2019/09/10/teen-...oking-pot-from-vape-pen-during-choir-meeting/

I just heard this story. The gal that supplied him with the vape went back and sat down in the classroom and authorities took her into custody.

Now how difficult is it to take that vape pen (or whatever it was, and have the contents analyzed. This can't be the first time that the devices were available for testing. If authorities are trying to get to the bottom of what's happening, they certainly should have a pretty good idea of what is going on.

I'm over 10 years of vaping and 1. I vape a ton less than I ever smoked for 43 years (2.5 PAD) and I've never had any bad experience. There are a lot of stuff out there meant to get you high that have nothing to do with vaping nicotine and it would be nice if our bureaucrats would stop their demonization of nicotine vaping products.

It seems obvious to me that this issue is being used to further demonize vaping as a whole. You can't tell me that the CDC is unable to discern that the pattern here points to a new and specific entity that has been introduced into the works. That they choose to paint the picture with very broad strokes is quite telling. None of these types of issues are being reported outside of the U.S. so far despite millions of vapers worldwide and the CDC hasn't considered that fact? I think not. I think they ( and others ) are purposely coloring the problem in a specific light in hopes of killing two birds with one stone.

Meanwhile back in Detroit ...

very. It can be done though. It’s expensive, time consuming and requires expert technical skills. The family of devices involved are called chromatographs.

which devices?

should, sure. It can get more complicated in practice

Yeah, it seems like it’s a problem.

Experts Have A Few Different Theories For What’s Behind The Outbreak Of Vaping Illnesses
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/danvergano/vaping-lung-illness-mystery-causes

One explanation for the onset of the vaping illness outbreak this year is the Trump administration’s April imposition of 25% tariffs on goods from China, suggested vape device importer KushCo’s Kovacevich, echoing a complaint made by his industry about the ongoing trade war for more than a year. That’s because China is where most vaporizers, cartridges, and other e-cigarette parts are made.

The economics are simple, he said, when a premium e-cigarette cartridge suddenly costs $2.50, but a cheap one that might expose users to shoddier material in the body of devices and uneven combustion temperatures only costs $1.25. “People will go with what is cheaper if the price difference is suddenly a lot bigger.”

With an added tariff, it’s possible that vapers have turned to more dubious home brews and less safe devices, he suggested. “The labs we use are inspected and use best manufacturing processes,” he said. “We are competing with chop shop factories in China knocking off branded counterfeits that say XYZ company on the package but are not really affiliated, and who knows what they are getting.”

I have wondered about the timing of all this. There was nothing for years then “boom”. something must have changed

Is it just me or did anyone else read that article and think, hmmm, did they just tie in DEVICES (hardware) as being responsible for the damage caused by inhaling oil?

Yeah, it seems like it’s a problem.

Besides chromatographs, there certainly are autopsies being administered and information provided by those that have gotten sick. The authorities have to have more information to provide above the generic message to just not vape.

They tried. There is some extremely weak stuff they might be alluding to. Some pod systems use very old fashioned tech that was abandoned by the e-cigarette industry years ago but has inexplicably come back in pods. Specifically silica wicks. There is strong evidence that this is an unlikely issue but it may be enough to allow someone to make that connection even if they know it will fall apart upon scrutiny.

This whole thing seems to be about screaming “TAKE ACTION!! TAKE ACTION NOW BEFORE WE HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING!!”

There’s a lot of rush to judgement going on.

What is so Monumentally Disingenuous about someone like the CDC say'n "just don't vape" is how many people trying to Quit Smoking will read this and throw their e-Cigarettes in the Trash?

Only to go back to a Lifetime of Smoking again.

I expect this kind of Tripe from Anti e-Cigarette groups and Most of the Media. But from the CDC? Which is supposed to be the World Leader in the Detection and Prevention of Illnesses?

Read a Reddit on this last night that I'm currently convinced is the proper take on the situation. Since it has to do with "other stuff," I hesitate to link it. But basically, other stuff on the black market gets cut with chemicals. Pure stuff is thick. Cut stuff is thin. Thin is easier to vape, but less effective in many ways, so people seek out the thick stuff. Recently (like within last month), black market is cutting it even further with ingredients that make it thick (after it's been thinned). Lab tech on Reddit was stating the thickening stuff is what is causing the lung issues. He gave chemical name for it, but said unless you work in a lab, you'd never really know, as thick is what appears as top quality, pure stuff. His advice: don't vape other stuff unless it's from a reputable source (i.e. states where it's legal to vape other stuff, and dealers are licensed).
