Neither cotton or rayon is safe if burned, so wicking techniques and safe Temps are needed. If both materials are done correctly, one is no safer then the other, and one should just decide based on personal preference. I have tried both (same box as shown in OP) and will never go back to cotton, simply because I have enough for a long time, and that rayon , for me, is slightly better

I prefer the results of rayon as well, so that's what I use. I highly suspect that the amount of impurities in cotton vs. rayon may not be so different, if you get decent quality rayon. And it's so much easier to work with, and yes, if it's not burning why would it be giving off so many impurities. I'm not saying go to some warehouse and pick up scraps of rayon off the floor, but quality rayon ought to be just fine, is the way I see it. I have NO control over the quality of the cotton in my drop in coils, by comparison.

Rayon! :)

I'm not going to trash either as I have used both and still have both but mostly use rayon now as I do prefer it.

As long as you are not burning it, I don't think either is a problem.

As for expensive cotton, I don't see it. I have used Walgreen organic cotton balls or pads that are cheap and can't tell the difference between them and really expensive Japanese cotton. Both taste the same to me.

Anyway, Organic doesn't mean no pesticides as many think. There is a list of over 200 allowed by the Government while retaining the organic label and yes even some of them are synthetic pesticides

I'm sorry, but this is not correct. Clothes are labelled according to their content. Many, many clothing and textile products are manufactured with 100% rayon. If a product contains polyester or other synthetic fabrics, it will be labelled accordingly. Rayon itself is "nearly" 100% natural cellulose.

I've been doing a lot of research, and Beamslider is correct - rayon does have a higher combustion point than cotton. But due to it's properties, it has no "memory," and wrinkles extremely easily. This is why it does not suffer ironing well. It does not melt, but the high heat can cause a "sheen" in the fibers that was not intended in processing.
...
I'm sure you're right, but I wouldn't know. I'm lazy and wouldn't buy clothes that aren't machine washable or wrinkle resistant. That's probably why I've never seen rayon fabric without some kind of synthetic blend. I guess it's the plastic stuff that gives it the wrinkle resistance.

I'll stick to the 100% stuff for wicking only. :)

Exactly - unless we grow it, harvest it, and process it ourselves, who knows what's in the cotton...and even then whether it'd actually be "safer" than rayon.

Again, agreed.
We all consume so many things with so many unknowns in them, it's hard to see getting hung up on little details. Relatively speaking, they both cost virtually nothing, so I'm gonna try and then use what I like best.

Any time. LMK how you get on, and if you like it.
Trying out this wick today, so far so good. Wasn't as difficult to roll as I anticipated. The EC is not as even as I was shooting for, but for a first attempt I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Another possible rayon convert? YAY. I love that stuff :) :) Gonna coil and wick my rainbow berserker today, I think :) Seems like an easygoing day for me, really. Just having the kiddo over for dinner. :) Enjoy, Leticia :)

Someone was going to mail me a sample a few weeks ago, but that never happened. So this is weird - I go to the local Sally Beauty to pick some up, and they have Graham CelluCotton, but it's not rayon - it's cotton, $1.99 in a 10' pkg. I wonder why they use the exact same trademarked name for two different products? And don't offer the rayon version in 10'?
Anyway, they didn't have the rayon version, and apparently, that is only available in 40' boxes (#44130). I just ordered some. Anxious to try it. I've been using cotton bacon, and about the only thing I don't like about it is pulling a consistent amount. I always use 2.5mm id coils, so I'm thinking I can play with the rayon to figure out optimum amount, then pre-cut a bunch of lengths of it.

Does anybody cut it to thickness, or do you all pull it apart like cotton?

You can cut it but it is easy to spread the strip and split it apart. For 2.5 mm coil about half of the strip is good. Need to thin out the tails a little after getting it nice and tight in the coil. I usually twist it to get more in the coil.

I use a 2.5mm coil and use rayon...I first wash my hands, then precut a bunch at 2 inches, probably 30 or so, then seal back the bag....i then cut each 2in strip in half, lenght wise. I then kind of press each wick a little, sort of compressing them, just so they hold a wick like form....if then put them into a zip lock bg and they are ready......now once your ready to use, you may find them perfect just as they are to use for a 2.5 coil, or you may have to pull off a little bit, or perhaps some might not be thick enough. It just depends on how you cut them to start.....

I usually just rip the rope in half lengthwise. I coil 3mm, and that's usually a bit too much. Do not fear thinning the tails, the stuff wicks like mad. Unless you are wicking a tank with massive ports, when you may want full thickness to stop flooding.

It is absolutely my go to for tanks. I prefer JC for my rdas still. I try the rayon in them every so often but just dont like it on high wattage cloud blowing builds.
I haven't tried cotton in over a year and I wasn't dripping back then... Maybe I should give it another try now that I have 3 RDA in daily rotation.

That's exactly how I do my Rayon wicks. I find that the best way to get the most wicking into a coil is to wet my fingers and twist the end into a point that I can insert into the 2.5mm coil. Once I get the end through the coil I twist the wick and pull gently to center it in the coil. That's the only way I can get the wick tight enough to allow for settling as it breaks in.

Once I get the wick centered, I trim both sides of the rayon fan tail to make the wick tail about the same width as the coil diameter. I've never had a dry hit doing it that way.

I've had lots of false starts with Rayon. I've been a Koh Gen Do fan for years and changed wicks every 3 or 4 days. Since I started using Rayon I can go a week or more before changing and when I do change the wick the coil is much cleaner than it was with cotton. The Rayon wicks come out much cleaner than cotton ever did. I could probably go longer on a Rayon wick, but a week is enough and the material is cheap.

I've had Sally's blue box rayon in the cabinet for a couple of years or more and never really switched. I'd try a wick and then go back to cotton. This time I'm sold on Rayon as a superior wicking material. The previous times I was always worried about chemicals in the process vs cotton. The truth is that both materials (cotton and rayon) use chemicals to break down the fibers and process into a "clean" material that's suitable for clothing and other uses. Supposedly, those chemicals are removed from the fibers by the end of production.

I'm not headed back to cotton either, but I do need to buy rayon. So Sally's beauty supply is a good place? (I had a generous member send me some rayon, but it seems I will be using it for a while.)

If there's a better place than Sally's let me know, as I would have a hard time walking in there without buying a leg waxing kit, I've been wanting one FOREVER ever since my hairdresser told me to go. HATE shaving, with a dire passion.... So it might be cheaper to buy it more expensively somewhere else, or at least spend less of my willpower.... Back when I was dying my hair I was in there all the time, but I'm officially an old lady letting my platinum grey hair grow in pridefully.... A lot of folk believe I'm still dying it but no, I am just enjoying the heck out of my "grey" and I can't wait until it all switches.

So, I guess I'm open to direction here as far as rayon? If Sally's is fine, I will just Go. There. :)

I agree, rayon is fantastic and is the only wicking material I use now

You can probably buy it online from sally's site, or amazon, just make sure you get the right sku# that is 100% rayon and the size/length you want. 40' box is sku# 44130 and 500' is 44060.
