tyoung: I have noticed that with a few. "Nanny's Nanner Puddin" by Gumpysesauce (very yummy) really does that. But it seems to take a long time before the flavor is affected and even then it just loses some of the taste...the aroma and sweetness gradually dissipate. Much like hop aroma in a dry-hopped...uh...sorry, enough of my home brewing analogies already!

But yeah, some get funky. Diane of MyVapeJuice says she routinely tosses her personal juice and DIY flavoring after a year (and the stuff she sells well before that). Probably not a bad guideline.
And, like someone just now said (sorry, can't see the name on my phone now), leaving dark and flavor-affected juice in the tank then topping off just causes the fresher juice to inherit the problem. Better to wash it out and start fresh. Might even keep an atomizer from getting all gunky.
