Wow..your right, I never thought about that.

I'm thinking there is a photo-electric or infrared switch in there that shines down the battery hole from the charger. I did notice something that looked like that when I ripped a battery apart to make my USB Passthrough.

Hmm..but that would not explain manual switch batterys...

HAha sorry. I was talking about the switch on the battery. Did not have my coffee yet. Anyways, there is a voltage sensing chip that detects when any device plugged into is below a certain voltage (if drops below around 2.5v), a positive charge is applied to the negative pole of the battery to charge it. The sensing circuit is constantly connected to the battery and when it detects acceptable voltage from the battery. Some charger detects current draw and when the battery is fully charged, its draw on the charging circuit will be low, then the charger stops.
