Charging VIA USB adapter query

Hello,
I recently purchased a new smok AL85 kit (Alien Mini), it is a single 18650 battery mod. I don't have an external charger and I'm planning to charge it through the mod USB port. I'm wondering if it is okay to use my Sony 1500mA 5v adapter ?

My main concern is not to fry the internal chipset of the mod if I use the 1500mA adapter. I'm currently using a 850mA adapter and it is VERY slow, it that takes about 7-8 hours to charge the battery to full when it is completely dead.

It is generally preferable to charge batteries in a quality stand alone charger. As I understand it, this is more important with multi-cell mods as they generally dont do a very good job of balancing the charge. I dont know of any issues with charging in a single-cell mod.

Thank you for your reply. Some of the new dual battery mods (Like the Pico dual) do have the balancing charge feature to avoid any harm when charging with the USB.

But I believe you miss understood my question, I'm saying I do not own an external charger and I will be charging my mod through the USB port and my main concern is which adapter to use, I do own a 500mA, 850mA and 1500mA (all are 5v). I want to use the 1500mA one for fast charging but I'm afraid it might provide massive input to the mod and on the long run might fry the chipset.

The wall adapter is just a power supply. The charger is built into the mod. The wall adapters don't push power into your mod. The built in charger draws the current from the power adapter. It will only draw the power needed.
Your fine using a 1500mA wall adapter.

Generally speaking multi-cell mods do a TERRIBLE job of balancing the charge. It is not recommended to charge within the mod.

Single cell mods can be fine but the charging speed comes from the chip not the adapter.

Spend $10 and buy a battery charger. You also might want to pick up a couple more batteries.

Of all the reaponses, this is the one that actually answers your question. Use the higher amp charger, your mod will only pull what it needs.

The USB port standard dictates how much current a USB device draws. Most that I've checked are at about 1A or less on phones and ecig mods. The current draw is controlled by a current limiting resistor in the charge circuit of the mod. That way you don't fry it if you plug it into an 8A USB charger.

In a multi battery mod the current draw is split across the batteries. You'll charge much faster if you buy a good 2 bay or 4 bay 18650 charger. Efest Luc 4 or Xtar VCT4 are my choices, although there are newer and fancier charges on the market these days.

Right, a USB power supply might have its limit, but the mod's charging circuits will restrict the charge current also.
With the USB connector of my HP Envy laptop, I found these currents while charging my e-cigarettes:

• 0.72A on Aspire Plato
• 0.80A on Aspire Pegasus Mini
• 1.08A on Aspire NX75
• 0.86A on Vaporesso Tarot Pro
• 0.78A on Vaporesso Nebula
• 0.85A on Vaporesso Tarot Nano

Thus, I think that a wallplug USB source being able to deliver 1A..2A is well suitable for any mod, though a dedicated cell charger might do a much better job, delivering a higher current for LiIon cells. At this time, I charge my LiIon cells with 2A. Of course, this is not a solution for mods with built-in cells.

There are cheap and small USB measurement instruments available on Amazon, showing voltage, current and mAh during charge. I have two of those already.

Thank you all for your replies, now I understand the full picture. I will be using the 1500mA for fast charging, I was kinda afraid a high current could deliver more heat and damages my mod, you know this device here in Egypt costs around 100 USD!! and Sony VTC6 battery around 20 USD, plus if you ordered it online it will be seized by customs since it is forbidden, this is why I'm being extra careful, soon I will get an external charger and an extra battery.

7 - 8 hours to fill up an VTC6 via an 850mA (4.25W) power supply seems kind of slow. Maybe the supply is a dud? I've seen USB supplies with “1A” stickers crumbling at 0.6A…
On a properly fed Lii-100 the VTC6 is done in a tad above 3 hours.
