I got a call from a banking center telling me there was a fraudulant .99 cent charge on my account, I just about hung up on her but she never asked for any personal info and told me to call my bank. I did call the bank and they told me that they did catch it and blocked the charge. The bank told me that usually this is done as a trial charge and if it goes through they will make a big purchase very soon!

Just curious.. why type of card is it? Visa? Mastercard?

I have a suspicion that this might have been a massive breach of Visa's processing system and nothing to do with where or how often, these cards were used..... our enterprising thieves went to the source....

At this point, no one should be seeing these anymore... the CC companies and banks should be nipping this in the bud before they ever get to the end user.

My card was a MasterCard.

That's the best course of action... if you are contacted, whether it be by phone or email, don't give anything, just say "Sure, I'll call the bank/visit the official page and handle it there"

As good as they can spoof the look of an official email from Paypal/etc... they can't spoof the links.... Paypal is not going to send you to blarp.schmo.nz

:)

Anyone that has visited the websites on the charge scan your device if you haven't already as the websites stay up for a set time and do attempt to download malware. This has been an international scam hitting hundreds of thousands of people and even company's and is not limited to any one store or type of transaction. Stay safe and keep an eye on the little charges as these scams are sadly regular and range from .99 up to 9.99 of whatever currency keeping below most alert notification levels.

Thanks for the heads up, TCO76. I haven't had any of the small charges. I try to keep PayPal as my best friend when online shopping when I can. I did have someone snag my info from my CapitalOne card last month. Maxed it out. It was quickly corrected by their fraud department, but scary as hell nonetheless.

I will be checking regularly for the small charges now. Thanks again for the heads up.

Honestly, this is the whole reason I use a pre paid visa to order things online. I put in the exact amount i need give a few bucks, just so i dont have to worry about about online theft. It seems like im being a bit paranoid, but THIS is the exact reason why i do it. what if they jacked all the cash in your account? that would NOT be a good thing.

Is it from buying on line ecig stuff? Or from a certain vendor? Or is it just a random we don't know how they got it type thing

It's a random we don't know. I had my Bank of America Visa stolen, replaced, and then they charged the new number and I had to do it all again. While waiting for my card to be replaced both times I used my debit card at all the same vendors and it was never stolen. There is speculation that it is a Visa processing server that has been compromised.

I refuse to let scammers alter how I shop. I shop online for the convenience. But I do use a credit union and credit cards that have excellent fraud protection.

This is the smartest thing you can do.

If you don't have REAL TIME scanning features in your AV software, get it! Most of the free virus scanner packages will remove malware, but not stop it from installing. You have to pay for the registered version to get real time prevention and it's worth it.

Malwarebytes Free and only $24.95 life time fee for enablement of real time protection.

Superantispyware is free and good for removing things that slip by.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and in the top 10, even compared to the high priced packages.

Everyone needs more than one virus/malware scanner. They all concentrate on different threats and use various algorithms to detect problems.

Interesting Dave. My windows 7 setup considers it a Problem if I'm running more than 1 anti-virus.

It depends on the type of SW. Microsoft security essentials runs real time checks as well as co-existing seamlessly with Malwarebytes which also scans anything that enters through a port.

SuperAntiSpyware is good for routine checks. Yes, there are packages that conflict with each other, but these work well together. Except for MWB, it's probably best not to have multiple real time scanning packages active.

I run MSE, MWB (registered version w/real time scanning), and I periodically run the freeware version of SuperAntiSpyWare and it finds adware and PUPs that the others don't catch or consider worthy of notification. I haven't had an infection other than PUPs in many years and I'm on the internet daily.

I was reviewing recent history on my debit card online this morning and I found a pending charge of $49.95 made to IEPTCS.COM this past Saturday. I checked their website and it's the exact same site that has been mentioned in this thread that I was a victim of months ago. I immediately called my bank and they suggested that I call back again, probably tomorrow, after the charge has posted (it is still processing). I will call them back tomorrow and initiate a fraud claim, but I wanted to give you all a heads up. It seems like they were going for charges less than $10 that might have gone unnoticed before but they've apparently stepped up their game.

Yeah, it seems like this type off stuff never ends.
Would be nice if someone could develop some code that when these crooks send something like this through the system and when detected, would send back a "search and destroy" to the offender's servers/IP addresses.
