Hello All,

I've heard everyone talk about it, I've seen it on dozens of reviews, I've seen it in several forum posts, but I've not been able to find any explanation or fix for it.

I'm talking about how some juices (regardless of what vendor) sometimes has a chemical or soapy flavor or smell to it. Some flavors exhibit it more than others.

One particular juice that I always seem to have trouble with is watermelon flavors. I've ordered from 3 different vendors and they all seem to have a funky chemical or soapy taste and smell to them.

Does anyone know what causes this? More importantly does anyone know how to fix or prevent customizing your juice order to have this rather nasty flavor?

One vendor in particular suggested to me that it was due to the extra flavor shots I ordered in my juice. After reading about it some folks suggested to let it steep and or pop the cap off for a day or more. Out of the 3 juices I ordered from this vendor the chemical and soapy smell/taste did dissipate except for the watermelon juice. 1 month later and I still find it unvapable. This is one juice that Phil would not want to taste.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm not sure what you're looking for here, but if you don't like the taste of a juice, and the taste doesn't go away after steeping... well, don't get that juice any more. There probably is no fix, and the explanation is that you got some bad-tasting juice. Sort of comes with the territory. Some juice is just going to taste bad to you, and the best you're going to be able to do is not vape it.

Hi Trick,

This is typically how the conversation ends. "Juice wasn't good. Let's move on."

Now I fully understand that taste is subjective but I don't think any vendor actually mixes a juice aiming for it to taste like chemicals or soap nor do I believe anyone looks to vape juices that taste that way. This is not a matter of "I don't like strawberry" or " I prefer tobacco flavors" type issue. This is an issue were I am detecting flavors that resembles more of an unnatural quality.

What I am looking for here is an explanation of what may be causing these flavors so that I can avoid them when trying new juices. As you can see I have only been vaping for 49 days and have already thrown hundreds of dollars at unvapable juice. This is ultimately what I am trying to avoid.

I've experienced this with a couple flavors. Obviously it's a problem with the flavoring either not mixing well with the PG/VG/Nic and/or the flavoring was "off" to begin with. I just assume that some of these flavors being created are impossible without the artificial taste that accompanies the flavoring. That's why people just tend to say "juice wasn't good. Let's move on". Some flavors tend to work(butterscotch imo) while others always taste fake to me(fruits mainly).

Since switching to DIY juice I've not had a single flavor I didn't like enough to finish the bottle. I order all my flavors from 2 companies, 1 domestic and 1 from italy and every single one I've gotten has been good. That's not to mention it's 1/50 the cost and you can tweak it to exactly how you like it. My suggestion anyway...my sig link has instructions on how to DIY the easy way if you want... Best thing I've done since switching from analogs.

Ditto on darkood post except I ONCE got the soapy chemical taste from a DIY. I saved it by continuing to adjust flavors. I know what did it too but I don't know why. I had the flavor going and it was good but thought I'd go for better and added a tiny bit of lemon concentrate flavor. Shook up dripped and yuck! I doubt lemon does that every time, in fact I only did it because I read lemon can ad some ummph to a flavor and I know that's true with cooking. I just diluted with more flavor and base and all was fine. The flavor never did get better by the way and I honestly forget what it was except it had some kind o fruit theme. I think sometimes there is just a chemical reaction between flavors that happens. It's a weird business because sometimes too much flavoring actually weakens the juice flavor! I'm always wary of this happening because I tend to mix with abandon. No. I do mix with abandon. I made 30 mills plus yester day pouring all ingredients in a bowl without a measure but I eyeballed the puddle sizes...looks about 1/4 th of that puddle or the puddle before as I remembered it. I do use the not super concentrated type flavors ....mostly. So far doing good but I'll probably maybe start keeping better track. Right now I'm just figuring out relationships of Flaors with each other and will o doubt "calm down" things a bit. Especial re : 30 ml plus quantities!

I understand the feeling. I had juice from a specific vendor, and it all tasted bad to me. I had juice from another vendor which I really enjoyed, but it had a strong alcohol aftertaste. I contacted the vendor, who was very helpful, and he also indicated to me that it was due to the "flavor boost" option I chose.
I reordered the flavors I liked without the flavor boost, and the aftertaste was gone.
Sometimes too much flavor truly does negatively impact the juice. Certain flavorings contain chemicals that you can "taste" if the concentration of flavoring is too high.
It may also be that you're sensitive to the taste of pg, or vg, or certain nicotine solutions, or a specific sweetener or other "taste" additive.

Well, from what I read and personal experience, the chemical/perfume taste comes from either a strong flavor or too much of it. The fact that you're adding extra flavor doesn't help. So I'm guessing that the flavors you're ordering are strong to begin with, then you order extra and it just ruins the juice. Some juices will lose that chemical taste by leaving the cap off. It sounds like you've already tried that... so it must be the flavor itself.

Cinnamon red hot at 50/50 18mg extra shot was cloudy and extremely soapy tasting. The vendor hasn't been really helpful, and steeping with the tip and lid lid off shows separation of a lighter brown layer. Re-shaking causes a re-clouding and I don't want to vape it again until it's clear.

I'm thinking the juice (and the vendor) gets to go in the trash.

Some juices/vendors always taste this way to me. I no longer order from those vendors. To make things more confusing, sometimes what tastes like soap or chemicals to me, tastes great to other people. Vaping is great, but there is a lot of experimenting to be done. You just have to find a few flavors that work for you. For what it's worth, Mr. Vape Inc. has a watermelon flavor that doesn't taste at all like chemicals to me. Tastes like a watermelon candy. But I can't promise it will taste that way to you. Good luck in finding flavors and vendors that work for you!

^ that.

I once asked a vendor what they added to the one juice that they didn't add to the other that tasted "chemically" and they wouldn't tell me. So now I mix my own and don't have to worry about whether it is sweetener or flavor enhancer that is causing me to have an off taste. So far the sweeteners and things I use don't have it, so I am fine.

I wish I knew what that was though. We are all so unique in our tastes.

Take a look at this wikipedia article and note the part at the bottom about "variation in taste response":
Coriander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Even something totally natural can have wildly varying tastes depending on the person. Also keep in mind a lot of flavors used in e-juice that are completely artificial and are not 100% going to match that delicious natural watermelon flavor you expect.

Not to say this is the absolute explanation, but it could be that there is something used in watermelon flavor that causes your brain to identify it as soapy or chemical tasting. Or it could just be that the vendors you chose used a cheap/bad watermelon flavoring. Or they all order from the same company that supplies the flavor. If it means that much to you contacting all those companies and asking who they order their flavoring agents from could solve your problem. A friendly e-mail never hurts!

After all that, if you just cant escape that off-putting taste, it may just be time to move on from that flavor. It sucks but taste can be a tricky thing. Once your taste buds and brain identify something bad tasting the response will stick. Haven't you ever tasted something nasty that you from then on cannot bring yourself to eat or drink or even smell because it immediately triggers an unpleasant memory?

Hope this helps. :)

I used 2 juices almost exclusively from one vendor for a couple years .They also refuse to look at when regular vapors have new complaints ...soo....guess what ? I branched out recently to this forum topic on flavors ,got recommendations and waalah ! I am happy as a clam .
Find new vendors and try the smallest avail samplers they have ..3 ml or 7 ml .
I agree with the author of this ...it is not your tastebuds ,it is a combo of lack of quality ingredients ,lack of stringent qc or even worse .( who really knows what a factory outside of the usa is doing )
I know use their hardware only but suffice it to say ..you get what you pay for and its worth the few extra bucks to me .I know the chemical taste well...esp with menthols ,and perfume taste instead of what they call fruits .

I vape DIY watermelon and I'm happy with it but it took me so long time to get what I really want since the first 10 bottles I prepared was smelling perfumery and tastes vary bad finally I down the flavor concentration to 6 % and I got perfect Taste after 2 days steeping.

I think extra flavor could effect flavor negatively but with watermelon I notice that steeping watermelon for long period will destroy the juice taste and will initiate chemical taste that why I do small batches every 3 days.

I tried to find informations about DIY fruit juice, unfortunately I found too many forum about tobacco flavor but very little about fruit flavors. I wish to find information about flavor percentage and steeping time to shorten my trail period.
