My daughter gets up late, so I don't expect to hear from her until this afternoon. Just sent a text to bro.

Bro replied. Concerned about the wineries. He has lots of contacts with them.

Yes, I hear there was lots of spilled wine up in Napa. That's wine country. You'd think they would know how to store bottles so they don't fall off the shelves.

That was nothing, Q. Didn't even know that's what it was.

Look at Uncle's pic and freeze it at the eyes rolling up - that was about it.

Santa Rosa is about 50 miles north of here. I'll have to check the news to see how bad it got up there. But barely a hint of it down here. Thanks! :thumb:

Thanks for checking in, glad to hear it wasn't a problem. Plus, I didn't want to have to see you rip your hair out if your renovation projects were about to start over!

Another thing. If you want to live in the Bay Area, it's best not to live in a brick house. It seems brick fares particularly poorly in an earthquake. I lived in a wood frame house in Redwood City, and that creaked and swayed, but it never seemed to get any damage. Maybe I felt more motion from the numerous quakes there, but the house probably held up better than something more rigid.
I think what determines the amount of shaking is the terrain, and what it's made out of. Redwood City, San Mateo and most of SF are pretty solid - probably why they're so expensive. Some areas are on landfill or softer rock, which don't do so well. You also don't want to be sitting directly over a fault line.

On the 1989 earthquake, our house built in 1935 barely shook. One crack on the ceiling and two vases fell off a shelf. That was it. Then you look around and it's a disaster area. Pretty sure though, that the areas that made it in the news were either over landfill or directly over a fault. Most of East Oakland is over landfill and Marina's pretty soft. Everybody else seemed to do OK.

I went to see Penny today. She was out with the big herd, but they were up by the barn, most of them in the run-in part because of heat & bugs. Penny stays out of there. Too crowded she thinks. She is low in the pecking order, and though most of the horses probably would tolerate her being inside, she doesn't want to be crowded in where she can't get away if someone decides to get aggressive. This makes me think that the new place will be better, since they are kept in separate stalls during the day.

Also, many of the barn owner's teenagers recently left home, so she has less help, and the fences have wires sticking out where pieces were spliced together. Recently, Penny has had a small cut about once a week, maybe from that. She is wary of the electric fence, but she might go up against it if another horse pushes her there and she sees no other escape route.

The new barn mainly has that broad white tape for electric fencing, which I think is less likely to cause injury. Some small sections were a kind called Electrobraid. I think all in all, the new place's fencing is safer than the old.

I took home some of the stuff that's accumulated at the barn. I plan to go back Tuesday and Thursday and get more.

I'm very hyped up about the move. I can hardly wait till it's over.

Meanwhile, the boy I tutor has sent me some stuff he's done on his iPad. He made 2 slideshows and built a robot from parts provided. And he e-mailed me with them, which is probably even more significant. We've been e-mailing back & forth, and he has to write to do it, and I correct most of his grammar. This is voluntary, so it's better than regular lessons, which bore him. He really resists them, till lately I had to speak very sharply to him about it. Yay!

The big BBQ is starting in an hour. We did it! We are well organized and relaxing before the peeps arrive.

Glad you are okay, Cindy.

Nice to see you, her.

I think Penny will like her new home, sandysu.

Hmmm, my invitation must have gotten lost in the mail. Oh well, I hope you all have a good time without me.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Glad to hear you're in one piece, Cindy.

I was out all day doing a little "contracting" job and have to go back to finish tomorrow. I was drilling a 5/8" hole in a concrete floor with my Bosch hammer/drill when the smoke leaked out of it. That necessitated another trip to HD, had just gotten back with the right size lag bolts, and a new hammer/drill...a Milwaukee this time. It did blow through the holes a lot better than the Bosch, and I know Tritium will guffaw that, but it's true. Of course the Milwaukee was twice the price of the Bosch, but going cheap didn't work out very well.
