Does anybody know if a fireplace damper can open up all the way by itself? Mine did during the night.

It's Casper the Friendly Ghost, trying to keep you from being smothered by carbon monoxide.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Hmmmm, check the "locking" mechanism, usually a sort of ratchet affair. If it's a "turn knob" style maybe try stuffing something around the knob between the mantel and the base of the knob.

I had a productive afternoon. I finally got all the roots cut on the one stump I wanted to get rid of and pulled it on Tuesday. Yesterday I took the hose to it and washed off all the dirt I could to save the chain saw blade and bar. Today I cut it up into fireplace sized pieces and took it all over to my neighbor who heats with wood, about a cubic yard of tree base and large root sections. There was one large log, the base that was left after felling, so while I had in in my hands to stack it I conned him into letting me put it on the splitter for him, I didn't want him wrestling with a 60 or 80 pound log (wet wood). He's about my age, bad heart and worse shape than me. It took the splitter about 8 passes to get it down to reasonable sized logs. Sweet gum it tuff to split by hand, by hydraulics make it so easy!

Now all I have to do is fill in the hole and throw out some grass seed.

Your nearest hydrogen bomb.
Cool stuff Roland! Maybe you can turn the hole into something. An oven for example. Or a compost thing.

After 286293753974635 lines of code which i deleted at the end of the day i look like this (video of me taken earlier) and my mind is.... Wax on... Wax off!
I feel old sometimes.

Terry i envy your home, it's very very nice and i'm happy you moved in :) Everything else will be solved, you have time now :)

The damper has a rod that hangs down with a ring on the end. I moves left to right. All the way left is closed, all the way right is open. I like to have it in the middle but it won't stay there and the dang fireplace smokes in the 1/2 way position so it's open all the time and a lot of my heat is going up the chimney. :(

Thanks Trit. There's still a lot to do but I'm trying to slow myself down. ;)

I don't remember if Rave mentioned this or not but she gave me a blue istick for a housewarming gift. It is soooo cool the it's neck and neck with my Provari. LOL!

She also gave me 2 small mason jars of that apple pie hootch she made. Gawd is that good. I have the recipe and am making some now. I can't wait to try it. It's so smooth and appley that you don't even taste the booze so it kinda sneaks up on you.

Terry, somehow you've got to add some friction to the pivot the damper handle moves on or the pivot for the damper itself. It may be as simple as a squeeze with a pair of channel locks but it sounds like the draft is pulling it open on you. Remember to open it all the way when you start a fire though to avoid those clouds of smoke.

My back is a little sore. It got used in ways it hasn't been used in a while today. A nice hot shower will fix it up very nicely though.

Triitium, I wonder if they'd recognize an old box camera or old reflex camera as readily? So what are you writing code for?

That sounds like a job for a handyman. :(

Same here about the back. It's not use to stacking wood. A hot shower does sound good. :)

OK. Question for you handy-people. I have an old wooden catch-all box. The lid is 13.5 X 8 inches, deeply carved. The finish on it is some dark, muddy stuff. I put some 3-M Safest Stripper on it for a few hours this afternoon, but it isn't doing a good job of cleaning out the crevices in the carving. After fussing around with my dremel (made by Black and Decker) this afternoon, I decided to dab on some stripper in chosen areas, to remove with cotton swab after a few hours. This looks to be a tedious job. Soes anyone have any oth suggestions for removing the mud?

My only suggestion is to let the paint stripper stay on for a while, as in a few hours at least, then have at scraping it off.
i won't use the like button on that!! The dabbing little bits on with swab, leaving it long enough, then rolling it off with a clean one is about the best I can do. Plus minimal exposure to fumes.

0mg, if you are going to mess around with things like paint stripper, you should have a respirator.

Yeah, I started thinking about how heavily I have this place winterized, and I will be working outside on it so long as the weather is tolerable. Thanks for thinking---- sometimes I don't.

0mg, those paint stripper fumes can really get to you. Don't breathe them. Work outside if you can. If you have to work inside, open a window and go breathe the fresh air from outside at regular intervals. Not only can it be bad for your health, but the fumes can do strange things to your head. If you start getting unusually irritable or having strange thoughts, think about what you are breathing. No, you are not losing your mind; you are getting high on paint stripper fumes.

Terry, I'm no authority on fireplaces, but the few I had only had an open and shut adjustment of the flue as far as I knew. Maybe if you open it halfway, you are just propping it between its 2 positions, and the slightest jiggle in the house can close or open it. Are you sure your flue has multiple adjustments?

haha I just so happen to be using the exact same thing on my front door right now! 3 layers of latex and 2 layers of oil. 1 to go! (third application):thumb:
Dumb idea to stain the front door instead of just painting it dark brown. :glare: What was I thinking...

That stuff doesn't work unless you wrap it in plastic and let it sit for a day or two. Not just loosely wrap, but actually in full contact. The goo is like glue - lay the plastic over it and smooth it out, like you would with contact paper. Put a little extra goo in the crevices and it'll scrape with no effort at all. Just be careful when you scrape though - the wood gets kinda soft after it's been sittling in all that goo.
