The freezing rain is really building now. It's formed a string of icicles all around the roof on each of the bird feeders. Won't be long before they form bars preventing the birds from getting to the food! They aren't gonna be happy 'bout that. I can expect revenge, cuz I just know that the little freeloaders will blame me.

We're supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow, and then it's going to warm up. Maybe some rain over the weekend when it'll still be warm. I hope it doesn't get too icy here. Maybe we'll escape most of it. I'd sure welcome some warmer weather if it didn't come with ice! This morning when I got up, it was minus 2. Now it's in the mid-20s, so I guess it's getting warmer already.

I just got home from tutoring and dinner out at Moe's, and then a quick grocery store visit.

The kids had off from school today, of course, and they'll be off for some time yet. But they didn't watch the movie, and that meant no movie reports! They have strict orders to do that before my next visit on Wednesday. They have lots of time, since there's no school. No excuses!

Today, we read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I found a short, easy piece on the Internet about Washington for the little girl, and there was a quiz at the end for reading comprehension. I said she could look back at what she just read if she needed to, but she insisted on answering the questions without looking, and she got them all right. She was really pleased with herself and wanted to do another one, but I hadn't found something easy on Lincoln.

So then she wanted another Presidents' Day word search, this time words related to Washington. While she was doing it, her brother came into the room and she asked him for help, so the 3 of us finished it together. He found the last word, breaking a tie between him and his sister, so he won. I don't encourage competition, but the kids seem to want that, and maybe it is good, since they work harder if they want to win.

So then I had the boy read something about Lincoln. We found a bunch of words he didn't know, which also is homework. But I told him more than the words, I want that movie report! If he does that, he doesn't have to study the words, but if I don't get a movie report, I expect the words to be learned. Maybe that'll urge them to do the movie. You'd think they couldn't wait to watch a movie, right? I think in their time off, they're allowed to do whatever they want, and they'd rather play video games.

I think they got addicted because often they sit in the restaurant playing them. I guess it keeps them quiet and their parents can work while they're there. I wish they had other activities, though. Even their little brother, who's about 3, has his little tablet with games and Thomas the Train in Chinese on it.

After the boy read about Lincoln, I read aloud to them about Washington, which included the story about him cutting down the cherry tree. They had never heard that tale, and I said to them, "This may be the first time you hear it, but it certainly won't be the last." The boy asked me what I meant by that. I explained that it's such a famous story, he's likely to hear it again at other times and places.

Did you know that the cherry tree story is probably fiction? It was written by someone named Weems some years after Washington's death. But it's generally considered made up by Weems to illustrate Washinton's famed truthfulness.

Then we did a Mad Libs, and then it was time for me to go.

I stopped at Aldi for a few things, like bananas, which we ran out of this morning. Unfortunately, they didn't have cat litter, which I'm getting low on. The cat has been staying in more and using the litter box with all the cold weather. Maybe with it getting warmer, he'll decide to go out more. In fact, today he wanted to go out, and he wasn't back when I left for tutoring, so he was out in the cold for hours. He seemed OK, waiting impatiently by the door when I got home. He's really been upset lately that it's too cold to go out for long, so I guess he got a good outing today.

Ohmygosh! Those are great!! I really like the explanatory blurb at the end too.

Well, my ice storm has passed and I'm still blessed with power, but I know darned well that it had to have hit Marlou too. Hope things are okay there. The roads here are beyond bad. I know this because my son is on call until 6 a.m. and has had to skate his truck along the roads for emergency calls. Along the main highway through here, he saw a pair of tracks in the sleet that led off of the road and terminated at a telephone phone which was snapped in two. I'm just hoping that he doesn't have to go out on any more emergency calls tonight. It's rough out there. :(

Good night, everyone. I guess the asteroid missed Earth once again. There's a long, rather tedious but interesting video about it, if anyone wants to see some inconclusive, vague photos from Dubai and hear about a lot of other meteroites that have hit earth. There's some interesting footage of the one that hit Russia.

The ice storm did pass through here, Rave I heard it raining, but it didn't exactly sound like rain. Early this morning a salt truck treated my street and I could see that my patio was icy. On tv they said there were some slippery roads. Who woulda ever guessed? lol

We mustn't have gotten it too bad. The ice on my patio isn't thick. But what difference does that make, you only slide on the surface of it. We are to get up to 48º today so that will get rid of the ice and maybe some of that weird white mixture of ice and snow on the ground.

60 degrees is predicted for this Thursday! Is there really a temp that warm? I've forgotten what warm feels like.

Good morning Volties.

Glad that most of you got through this latest blast of winter. We just got a dusting last night and now the sun is out. I hope the warmer temps melt our stationary snow/ice pack that doesn't seem to want to go away.

Spanky is getting a much needed bath and grooming session at the moment which was long overdue. Static electricity was his constant companion.

Enjoy this brief warm up Volties because I'm sure it won't last too long. ;)

Good morning. We never did get snow last night, though the wind came up about 9 o'clock. But when I got up this morning, it started snowing just a little, and the weather forecast has changed to maybe an inch at most today. It's overcast, though. No sun. That's pretty routine for this area, though. We have a lot of cloudy days compared to many parts of the country.

So, what to do today? I have my lesson for Wednesday prepared for the kids, just in case there are no movie reviews. I have a book that the boy tried to read back when we first started, and I want him to read at least some of it now. He struggled with it before, and I realized it was way too difficult for him, but now I think he can read it without too much trouble. I want him to read some of it and remind him of how he struggled with it just months ago, and now it's easy. That may make his progress more visible to him, though he proudly told me he went up several reading levels at school. Still, I thought the here-and-now reality of reading something that he had trouble with before might impress him. I don't know, though. These kids seem very impressed with levels, marks, and scores in a way I never was, and my daughter didn't seem to be.

Since the little girl liked that George Washington reading comprehension piece so well, I downloaded and printed several for her. They were all marked for 1st grade, but they are of varying difficulty. I'll let her choose which one she wants to try. One problem is, she wants to try difficult stuff, then struggles with it. I think sometimes both kids choose books based more on bright pictures than reading a little and seeing if they can handle the content. I guess that comes from experience. I have suggested that they read a little of the book and see if it's something they want to read or not. I think I have to say that again, since I think still they choose a book by its cover more than its content.

So, anyway, I don't need to work on a lesson plan. I guess I should work on that picture of Gabe that's sitting here staring at me, but I keep avoiding. I can't tell if I'm just not in the mood for drawing or if it's the difficulty of the picture that's holding me back.

Terry, are you doing any artwork now? What's going on with the sleeping puppy?

Good morning Volties.

Glad Raven, Marlou and JoAnne and Spanky are all doing okay with the storm,

Those figure skating photos were a hoot!!! SandySu.

The Russian meteorite/comet explosion of the early 1900's {1908?} is fascinating.

27 degrees this morning and so far no wind. The temp is already up to 31 but it is overcast and heavy winds are predicted. Hopefully some rain tomorrow.

The trainer is supposed to come today so I need to make sure I am organized for that. I am concerned that the first signs of wind are occurring. Let's hope it holds off. Can't train in high winds.

I really do enjoy reading about your tutoring sessions with those kids, Sandy. I'm in awe of how good you are with them. Just sayin'.

We had a trespasser, or more like a squatter that had to be evicted. I felt kinda bad because he was really sleepy. The kids brought him upstairs to introduce him to me.

My son's gal has a feral cat that she cares for. When it's really frigid outside, Tez is allowed to wait for warmer temperatures in their room. But, there is a cozy box set up outdoors for her to protect her from the rain, snow, and inclement conditions when she doesn't want to be inside. However, this sleepy guy decided to make that box his own:

It's 39 degrees here already, and predicted to climb to 47 degrees! Heat wave!! This entire week is supposed to stay above freezing during the days. All of this :censored: snow and ice will melt away. For once, I won't be the least bit saddened to see it go.

Glad to hear that everything's okay there. :D Yep - Thursday is supposed to be very warm but rainy here. I forget what warm outdoor temperatures are like too. It's been a rough winter all over the country.

I stopped liking opossums when I learned that they carry a disease called EPM. What is the full name? Equine protozoal myelitis, I think. Anyway, it devastates horses. Many horses have had to be put down because of it, and the treatment is very expensive and not always effective. It affects the nervous system of a horse, and they become uncoordinated, sometimes to a crippling degree. Some recover, and some may improve but never be coordinated enough to make riding them safe. If you have an opossum in your barn, you can almost guarantee your horses will get sick, at least in this part of the country. I'm not sure how widespread the danger is.

One thing that really bothered me but I fear will never be changed is that I proofread 2 books by Rita Mae Brown, supposedly written by her cat, Sneaky Pie Brown. The main character is a woman whose husband is a horse vet. So you'd think she'd know. But she keeps an opossum in her horse barn as a pet. It's a wild opossum, but she puts food out for it. How crazy can you get? Did her husband never notice the opossum and warn her about EPM? Of course, I had to say something about this in the margin, but I was proofreading for the paperback book against the already-published hardcover, complete with illustrations that pictured the opossum. So I knew they weren't going to change it. I could only hope that word would filter down to the author, so maybe she'll phase the opossum out of future books. The books were set in Virginia, so I looked up EPM in Virginia, just to be sure the danger existed in that area before making note of it. Yes, they have EPM in Virginia.

So whenever I see an opossum, that's what I think of. Opossums are not nice animals, IMHO.
