If you can't get all those little hairs blacker, I think that's OK. The main difference I can see is that the top dark area over the eyeball is a lot darker in the photo. And you made the bottom dark enough, so I think you could make the top as dark. There's just the faintest lighter area in toward the nose. You made a dark rim at the bottom of the top eyelid (or whatever it is), so I think you can darken the rest of it, too.

This is another very good drawing. I think I like the puppy better because I can see the whole thing, but I understand that you want to practice eyes.

BTW, how did you make that one dark hair that comes out of the tuft of dark above the eye? That's black enough, and it's a very fine line. So you can make really dark, fine lines.

The dark black around the eyeball (and the pupil) is charcoal and yes, I can darken the area around the eyeball ok with charcoal but I'm afraid that if I try darkening the black hairs, like in the lower right, with charcoal, it will wipe out the white hairs. That one dark hair up top showed up good because the background was light so a dark graphite pencil worked fine but it's a dark gray, not black. I guess I'll just go with a charcoal pencil for the dark hairs and see what happens. It's just practice anyway. :) Thanks for your feedback.

I chose the puppy because his eyes were closed. All I was thinking about was the eyes. I didn't think about all that shading. So to practice an eye, I cropped one eye from a photo to practice on. I'm not ready for 2 eyes. :?:

I would miss the green, just not the rain. Why can't it just rain at night and be sunny during the day?:facepalm:

I remember when I was a kid and wanted to go out and play on a rainy day asking that same question. In fact, sometimes it does happen, and when it does, I think of that childhood wish every time.

I hope you get some sunshine soon. The Pacific Northwest is known for its gloom, though. I remember traveling up there, though, and coming to a waterfall with velvety green all around. I could hardly believe it was real. So there is beauty in that region. You just have to see it through the raindrops and fog.

There's no doubt that Western WA is a beautiful state but it's the rain that makes it beautiful. I wish I could appreciate that but I can't. Eastern WA doesn't get anywhere near as much rain and it is dry and boring. Dry and boring is sounding pretty good about now though.

Terry, can you use the charcoal kinda lightly then use the sharp edge or corner of an eraser to make the white hairs that way?

That dark graphite that I already have down will never erase white. It will only get a lighter gray but if I really mess it up with the charcoal I'll try that. What will I have to lose? ;) I could try that with the new electric eraser.

I have been watching alot of sketching tutorials on youtube and I was wondering if you tried using graphite and/or charcoal powder to shade with? I have been playing around with it and its quite fun. you blend it with a soft brush. It can be a paint brush or if you want you could use an eyeshadow brush. It erases really easily, too. Just look on youtube if you are interested. :2c:

Yeah, I had it on my wish list at Blick's but had to postpone getting it because my list was so long. If I had used graphite or charcoal powder on the Snowy River sky, I think it would have turned out really good.

It's kinda time consuming but you can make your own with the blocks or sticks. I got some in my sketching kit and you can use sandpaper or a file and grind it down... a little bit goes a long way.:)

Yep, I thought about that AFTER I screwed up the Snowy River sky. :( I think I would rather wait for the powder. Lot easier.

Maybe a dead leaf curled on itself? That could add dimension, couldn't it? It would have a shape and shadow. I dunno, I am really tired but can't sleep so if I throw something out there that's... well, out there, blame it on that.:laugh:

That's sound like a great idea. Go for it. How about this one?

Hmm, I like all of those. But I may have something backed up that might work. :toast:
Fiance and I take a lot of nature walks with our camera so i may find something to work with.

Before I can draw though, I must clean of my desk. I am getting kinda claustrophobic.

It would be better to draw from your own photo anyway. I can't wait to see it. :) I haven't even looked through my own photos yet.
