I just took down a maple tree - it got hit by lightning a few months ago - nobody wanted the wood and I always thought maple was a good burning wood. I kept part of the trunk for hobby projects down the road...

We would have taken that maple in a heartbeat:)

Busy, busy, awsum. I like it....you know my motto "Lots to do and less time to do it."

Privacy is a thing of the past, awsum. of course, living in a small town, I realized long ago that privacy is an illusion.

I can only report anecdotally, but everyone I know who is active on FB or other social media, embraces Google, does online banking and ignores the intrusive nature of apps on their phones and computers have suffered some form of identity theft. Many of them multiple times. Maybe it's "the luck of the draw", then again maybe not. I just don't feel comfortable with any of it.

I had an FB account for about two hours. I used my Google email for it. That lead them to my phone and my Hotmail account. They accessed all the contact lists. That was more than enough to make me close the FB account. It's too late, I know, but at least it's stopped at that.

If I remember correctly the stopped doing that - to much heat from the masses...

I also use Firefox and I have it set up so every time I exit from the internet it clears my cache, cookies and history... I win :D There is no way the Feebs can get in my computer... just sayin'. Heck even our phone/internet provider doesn't know how to check up on what we are doing. We had a problem a few months ago and the guy on the other end was reading the procedure from a manual... Fiance ended up telling the guy how to fix our own problem. Dude on the other end was blown away, said fiance should come work for them cause he's really smart.:lol::lol:

I'm no expert by any means, but I saw a piece on "60 Minutes" where a guy in Germany hacked into the iPhone of a US Congressman who happened to be on the phone in San Francisco. In another example he activated the camera on another iPhone even though the phone was not in use, asleep on charge, when he did it. In those two cases, the guy was a "white hat" hacker and had authorization to the network but that kind of access is now for sale. Disquieting to say the least.

In terms of computer security, if you're online, you're vulnerable and I'd guess that's true even with VPN connections. If there's a will, there's a way. The saving grace is that it is so expensive to do only governments and a few other entities can afford to do it. Look at what Yahoo just announced. The other saving grace is that us normal folk don't attract that kind of attention or warrant that level of expense and effort.

    Good morning, Volmaniacs.

We haven't turned off DircTV yet but we are planning on doing so before our next bill cycle. The watching free TV is actually going pretty well. There's actually quite a bit of shows on Amazon Prime/FireTV that we think are good. Then there are the freebies at Lifetime, ABC and NBC as well as others. Tons of movies are available. Most TV and movies don't appeal to us but there are plenty to watch, even so.

We went a couple of years without cable, but after a period of time what was available on the internet became harder to find good choices. Many networks started requiring logins with your cable providers name. So now we have basic cable...

There are a lot of TV shows that you can't get so we shall see how far we can ride this pony before we cave but I think it will be quite awhile. There is so much on TV that we don't watch like sports, most movies are garbage not worth watching IMHO, most shows like Big Bang Theory, anything that includes zombies, all of the NCIS or Quantico stuff we never watch, never watched Breaking Bad or a number of other popular shows.

I like DIY tv and HGTV but I really only watch those when there is nothing else on. I like seeing how houses are laid out and the styles of houses on those buying a house show. And seeing how they fix up houses is fun. But, I often just turn it off since I can read a book or go get something done.

It looks like I will not be able to watch The Incredible Dr. Pol and I will miss that show.

Looks like we can watch Empire which I would like to see and that is from episode 1 until now. We never watched the Sopranos and we get all the seasons of that for free.

There are so many free movies available, it is crazy. However, most of them don't make my short list:)

I found a website that you can look up TV shows on and then find them online [they tell you if you have to pay and if there is a free site to watch on]. At least you can look up shows to find out what app they are playing on or what major network. You click on the app/network icon under the episode and it takes you there on the internet. Very easy and convenient.

    'moaning, Volties.

So share that web site, Lizzie. Inquiring minds want to know :)

Another gorgeous, early fall, day here. Tons of stuff to do and never enough time to do them. Why is it when I see something that needs doing inside, it's nice outside and, when it's rainy outside, I don't remember those inside things?

The website is called Sidereel. You can't get an app for the Samsung galaxy tablet but you can use the web to use it on you tablet. You can get an app for Apple, apparently, but I have no desire to use my phone for a tv finder. I won't be getting another Apple phone anyway since the way you back it up is very irritating [as well as a few other things].

The way I have been using Sidereel is on the internet sitting at my computer but I can use it on the Galaxy tablet by going on the internet on the tablet and then it will find my app for Lifetime or ABC or PBS or whatever on the tablet and use that app to display the show.

What we did to manage the TV and the shows is we got a Samsung Galaxy tablet with 16 gigabits at Costco yesterday and we use it just for the TV. That way the tablet is always available in the den. I have been downloading apps like ChromeCast, Lifetime, ABC, Kodi, PBS, NBC, YouTube, Amazon video, Amazon Firestick controller and Smithsonian. They are all on this tablet so you can use the tablet as the finder/controller for the TV. The tablet was a great price and is working out good.

I couldn't use my Amazon Fire tablet for the TV since it doesn't like ChromeCast and I seem to have an older version with no work around for making the tablet accept Chromecast. Another thing I can't get on Amazon Fire tablet is Barnes and Noble NookBooks. Kind of cheesy if you ask me.

This computer stuff is pretty confusing but I think I am doing okay.

Sounds like we like a lot of the same stuff and do not care about the same stuff. But my basic cable did come with the history and food channels and I got the sci-go channel, which I like, but my wife can do without.
Has more horror than sci-fi. Don't want it. I have too much adrenalin in my system normally.

Barnes and noble and Amazon are rivals of course you can't use NookBooks on the Fire! Unless you jailbreak it. I'm going to figure out how to do that with my current Fire as I'm get the Fire HD 8" for christmas.... I'll finally be able to take pictures for y'all! I think I'm getting a Magenta one, if not that then Blue.

I'm so excited, mine is kind of crapping out on me, has only 8 Gigabytes and no sd card slot. My new one will be 16 gb with up to 200gb sd card  WooHOO... Comeon Christmas, I'm ready for cold weather anyway!

@celticluvr yes, I read that you can bypass the restrictions on the newer fire tablets just by going into settings but mine seems to not have that setting probably because it is a bit older.

I like the Fire tablet with Kindle a lot and the price is right.

Love the different colors. Merry Christmas to you.

Thanks, Lizzie, I'll have an in depth look at Sidereel tomorrow morning over coffee.

Celti, you need Christmas in October! I'm in no rush for the cold weather, the days are getting rapidly shorter already.

Horror movies, today, seem more like gore fests to me. What happened to suspense being the main ingredient in a horror movie? "13 Ghosts" scared the heck out of me with no real blood. I guess it's a function of the availability of CGI, special effects and trying to outdo the other guy or the last blood fest.

We went on a tour, of sorts, today looking at butchers. Since we want to raw feed the new dog we do need a ready source of things that the grocery stores just don't have and, if they do, charge way too much for. Plus, we'll probably buy it in bulk, portion it and freeze it. Freezing for two weeks or so, kills any "unwanted friends" that might be in there. Then again, dogs are able to handle things in their food that would send humans to the hospital.

We ended up looking at two places. The first was a real meat processor, from on the hoof. They had large bags of the things we're looking for, plus large bags of chicken quarters, turkey legs and other "by products". They seemed pretty good in terms of being able to walk in and get exactly what we want in larger quantities and a really good prices.

The second place was a real butcher shop. They had most of the stuff we're looking for and some stuff that would make nice additions, both for the dog and us. Venison steak, rabbit, goat and sheep as well as marrow bones and the other things we're looking for. We did buy a 10lb bag of chicken legs and a 5lb bag of chicken wings from them. That'll get us and the dog started and should last about two months for switching from dry food to raw food. Again, very nice and accommodating and they will assemble an order for pickup. We also bought a pound cake, for us, which is really pretty good. (Tomorrow toasted with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and walnuts.)

The problem with both of them is that they are a pretty good ride from here, although still in Burlingon County. I guess I'll be taking a couple of coolers for the trip when we get things moving.
