As a matter of etiquette, is it considered wrong to order a Chuck designed the same as one of the custom jobbies pictured on the Chuck homepage? I liked one of the custom designs I saw, but would have him change the colors... would that be considered gauche?

I wouldn't think it's a problem. There's no patents involved but you might just find out whose design it was and PM them, and tell them what you say above - admire their design, would like to use it, changing colors, etc.

Being the proud owner of a Chuck, here's what I would do if I saw a design on the Chuck Thread that I'd like to emulate. I'd post the request on that thread (or PM them if I knew who's is was) and ask. I personnally like the flames on one of the Chucks and it's owner has already given permission to use his idea, so I ordered and asked that the colors used be in those of my own choosing. No problems. Jeff and gang are great. You won't find a better product or service out there. Enjoy.

As long as there is some kind of difference in the final chuck(slightly different design, different colors, adding of a design or logo or name on the back) Jeff does not have a problem with it at all. If you wanted the exact same thing, Jeff will only do it with express consent of the original owner. So yes, just post in the satueday thread, asking who's it is and if they mind if you use the design, if it is the same. Different colors should not be a problem, but you might want to ask anyway, just to be nice. I doubt there will be an issue at all. Welcome to the world of Chucks!

I would LOVE to have a custom made little chuck like Jeff's but with a button like this...

But when I tried to mention anything like that yesterday I got bashed like there was tomorrow.
And then today big buyer melts his cart from leaving it in his pocket after knowing all you need to do is unscrew it from the atty. Accidents happen. Designs can be improved. When you try to make suggestions, you get yelled at and called ignorant.

And what do you think this post of yours is going to get you? Why are you even posting the info above in this thread? The OP's question has nothing to do with your rant, he was asking about color changes, not design changes. You just looking for trouble now?

VaporHead4Life,

I think you would have gotten out of the bashing if you had sent a PM to Jeff directly with your suggestions. Chuckleheads are fiercely loyal and probably felt you were the one doing the bashing.

I own a little chuck and have had absolutely no problems with the button unlike one of the other big mods I purchased.

What I am trying to say is tact goes a long way. If the chuckleheads felt you were attacking the product or the creator, all bets are off. Go read the GG forum or the V4L forum and you will see the same thing.

Just my $ .02.

Sorry, Karl the heretiK, I hope your question was answered somewhere above, before the downturn.

I too apologize for highjacking your thread.

Another member of the forum asked about using my avatar for a little chuck. I had no problem with it, but I do not own the avatar, I just copied it from Photobucket.

I think you will be fine if you ask for permission.

Hey, if a highjacked thread is the worst thing that happens to me today, I'll be very grateful...

Yah, I do prefer the Altsmoke button, but to post a mechanical design change to the Chuck and NOT expect to get flamed, lol... sure, it would be great to have the Chuck graphics with the Altsmoke button.. but that's just the way it is... maybe someone should get on Altsmoke about NOT having customizable graphics!

And I think if I do want to get a Chuck, I'll get permission from both the owner and the builder beforehand... it just seems respectful, no?

BTW, the one I really liked was the yellow triskelle knot (that celtic knot looking thing) on the green background... I think it would look great as a silver knot on a matte black background with silver caps... what do y'all think?

Layyyter!

I got an e-mail from Jeff the other day, asking me if it was OK if someone else used my design (the nicotine molecule). I replied and said it was just fine with me. The finished product was distinctly different from mine, though clearly based on the same concept and design. I'm happy that someone else likes my idea, and even happier that the finished product isn't an exact copy.

So if you're interested in etiquette, I'd suggest you e-mail or PM Jeff, ask him to ask permission from the originator of the design you're interested in, and proceed from there.

Well, I for one didn't bash you at all, I just asked you a simple question...

So which would you prefer...

A) A Chuck as thick as a microphone
B) A super thin Chuck with a huge button hanging over the sides

Which for some reason you chose to ignore.
I guess bashing you has a better chance of getting a response.
:)
