Clapton, fused clapton, half staggered fused clapton..someone help!

So as I progress on my vaping journey, I now own one RTA and a couple of RBAs. Obviously, I need coils for them, and have been using prebuilt Demon Killer ss316 ones. I also got a spool of 28 ga 316 wire, but the coils I get from that are so flimsy they get mutilated before the screws are even tight!

I decided to find me some fancy wire to build with, and the choices are crazy!!!!!

I've found the following types:

1. Clapton
2. staggered fused clapton
3. half staggered fused clapton
4. super clapton
5. tiger

I can't figure out what the difference is between them all, and what kind of wraps I'd need to get a safe resistance to vape on regulated mod. I understand resistance isn't so relevant wrt regulated, but taste is everything....

Which is the tastiest wire...and what specific strength are each of these famous/well known for?

You build to how you like to vape first off..

What's important to you?

How many watts do you normally prefer to vape at?

Do you like a warm vape or a cooler vape?

Someone who enjoys a warm vape at 90 watts has entirely different needs in a coil than someone who wants a cool vape at 35 watts, or a warm vape at 10w.

As for mangling your coil before getting the screws tight, keep the coil jig through the coil while setting your coil in place and tightening the screws. It's very helpful.

I vape on TC mode at 18.5W, 420F, reistance usually at 0.5 ohm. In power mode, I vape at 30W and below, again same resistance.

I like a tepid vape...neither too warm nor too cool.

No. The fancy coils are to increase surface area of the coil, and the outer wire acts as a heat sink. These things are more important to vaping at higher wattage than anything.

While greater surface area can also gives more opportunity for flavor, you can get more surface area out of a single coil as well by using higher gauge wire and just using more wraps, or creating a spaced coil instead of a contact coil.

I vape using 26 gauge wire at 1.4 ohms and have massive flavor out of just a regular contact coil...

Position also matters and is different for each RTA as well, a 1mm difference either closer to the air flow hole or farther away can make massive differences in flavor too.

Interesting....so I'm probably better off experimenting with diffent sizes of simple wire rather than buying some clapton that won't improve flavour in any way.

I think for many it's a copout for those who don't want to take the time to learn how to build...

For others it's because they want to vape at higher watts.

But yes, experimentation with different gauges of wire and different wraps is what you should do. If I were you I'd buy some 26 gauge wire.

Position of coils ... exactly. I'm about a test on my 2 Kayfun V5' on same coils, same wicks and different positioning. I get 2 different experiences.

I use 28 gauge SS for my builds, usually coming out near 1.0 resistance. With spaced coils especially, yes, keeping the coil jig in there will help with installation. I got some simple round wires of various gauge SS and some of them can be really flimsy, so finding the right gauge for you is important. Playing around with contact coils, spaced coils as well as coil position will help you find the flavor you want.

I use simple round wires but I am a MTL vaper, I don't need a chunk of rusty exhaust pipe in my vape, and the more metal you use, the more wattage it will need to heat up. I think you can probably find the right vaping experience using different types of simple, round wire, that you build yourself. It's also a lot cheaper than buying "exotic" coils, they can tend to be pricy....

28 guage is very thin and will be a PITA to build with. You could try twisting it or invest in some 26 guage SS.

I would recommend you perfect your standard roundwire coils before attempting anything more exotic.
Are claptons useful? I would say use some and make your own decision. They do contain a lot of metal and will require more wattage to run than a standard coil.

1. Clapton - A core wire with a thinner wire wrapped around it, like a guitar string.
2. staggered fused clapton - A fused clapton has multiple cores, staggered has a second wrap that interleaves the first wrap
3. half staggered fused clapton - no idea
4. super clapton - single core clapton with an additional ribbon wire wrap
5. tiger - round wire twisted with ribbon wire

I mostly use 28g SS316L wire ø2.5mm.
For MTL, 10-12 wraps ends at about 0.9ohm.
For DTL (drippers), 4 wraps in twin coils for mech mods ends at 0.2ohm, for regulated mods 6 wraps twin coils ends at 0.35ohm.

After using a lot of round wires in different configurations, I switched to Claptons, and I must say, I enjoy those a lot more.
Flavor, warmth and cloud density increases, but at the price of a slightly slower ramp up, but the thinner the wrap and core wire(s), the better the ramp up.
I'd stay away from wires with multiple wraps like tiger or super claptons though, because they are a lot more powerhungry without any significant benefit.

Gotcha.

I don't see a huge difference in these Coils besides the Higher Mass ones have a Slower Ramp-Up/Ramp-Down.

But YMMV. And for the Price, it is a Good Way to try things.

I get more flavor from my tri core fused clapton single coil at 23-24w than I ever got from a single wire build. As in all things vaping it is subjective. You won't know until you try. Use some exotics and play with different gauges of single wire builds. Tiger wire in an excellent flavor carrier, easier to use in single coil rta/rda. Simple fc for me is just okay, but has many who love them. Staggered fc just plain rock, my preference for larger airy rda dual builds. You may find you prefer an exotic build in one atty and single wire build in another. Have some and play with them all!

Love you, but I disagree. I get much more satisfaction from my multi wire builds than from a simple fc. Two core is okay, tri or quad core are near sublime for me.
