Good morning, everyone.
After my son's report and diorama, we pivoted to the racing event for his science competition's solar hybrid car. His team spent several weeks building it and correcting it and, in the end, had a car capable of moving under either solar- or battery-power. The race was held last night against approximately 15 other cars... But in both qualifying heats, their car refused to even cross the starting line.

Funny, on the practice track in the other room, the car was performing flawlessly...
Reminds me of being in the boy scouts, we had a car race as well but with little wooden cars. Each got a block of wood about eight inches long and four inches wide, and it was square. The rules stated that it had to be under a certain weight and not over another. So sanding and tuning it went. Made the front a sharp edge and crafted the sides to be more aerodynamic.
To add the weight back that had been lost, little holes were drilled in the back and bb's were added with wax in the back until the desired weight was taken. So off to the races, a ramp in which there were eight lanes if I remember correctly and a little wooden peg in front of each car, so that the pegs dropped at the same time and all the little cars went forward at the same time.
I won every race, never lost one and yet still did not make it to the finals. My estranged father made a fuss, and a vote was taken. I watched as parents wanted their child's car to forward and voted against me. "Any other votes." and I up on the stands in disbelief raised my hand again to vote once more; young, but still not able to understand how an 8-0 car does not make it to the finals beating everything there.
Did not matter, politics are at every level even down to grade school and money speaks at all levels, did not get to race in the finals but I know
my jet black car would have won. Sounds like a wire came loose just before the race......
