Bottom coil looks way loose. It needs to be tighter. Try to get it the wire completely under the negative screw. A lot of times a hot leg on the bottom coil is due to it being too loose and not touching the wick. Remember that the wick acts like a heat sink. Any coil that is not touching the wick will cause hotspots. These Chids are finicky, they're often inconsistent due to the positive center pin moving all the time. Plus the center pin nuts are a pain to tighten without loosening the other nuts.

The horrible taste your getting is hotspots. When tilting, you should not see any of the coils glowing when juice is flowing correctly to the wick. Also, if what you have in there is the wick and coil that came with the Chobra/Chid. You should trash it, take the atty apart and wash it thoroughly. Make a new wick from scratch.

If this is your first time using a genesis atty, don't get discourage. Everyone has been there, you will get better in time. It took me over a week to get mine set up right and I pretty much got it down now. That still doesn't mean I don't run into problems, I can recognize the problem faster and fix it quicker now due to the experience. Good luck man.

It is the wick that came with it, but I re-rolled the coil, when I pulsed it, it was perfect, but after I was putting juice through it, it got the hot leg- I was pretty thrilled that it worked at all and am confident that I can create a good coil - the thing is, I've got some new Aga-t's just sitting here- would it be a better idea to use them? The process of rolling a wick with only a little bit of SS is kind of scary - Some say oxidize the whole thing, others say just pulse and you'll be fine...

2 things though -

1- I thought that the coil shouldn't really be touching the wick per ehumans guide? Doesn't this cause shorts? OR do you just not want to "choke" it, and the oxidation (carbon?) causes it to NOT short out?

2- Does the top come off the tank? I feel like putting this into boiling water is going to destroy the tank.

The coil should be lightly touching the wick, all the way around. No spaces. It is the thin oxidation layer that insulates the wick.
The tank comes apart. Remove the nuts from the center post. Push the center post out the bottom. Grab both knurled areas on the top and bottom sections, and unscrew.

agreed with jase- that bottom hot leg needs to get worked out. you can actually run that bottom leg pretty much right along the base of the top plate. dont be scared of the lead touching the base plate. when you run the lead under the nut, just have it go under one side of the nut. dont wrap the lead around the nut. dont worry about doubling back on that lead either. just run it under one side of the nut's head and fasten the nut down securely.

then, work on having even tension throughout the coil. incorrect or uneven tension will cause hotspots. and those hotspots will manifest themselves by way of horrible tasting vapor. they also cause fire because juice is flammable and hotspots are like sparks. you wont see your coil glow when its setup properly after juice is in the tank.

i think youre close to getting it. keep at it.
