I need some advice. I have a rainbow V3, phoenix style dripper. The coil attaches in the top of the post. the airhole enters from the side at about the height of top of post. So if I put the coil on top of the posts the air flow is from the side, slight lower then the coil. The vape is just a little harsh on throat hit. Assuming its throat hit, because it doesnt taste too hot or anything. Just a little more irritating to my throat then it was with a bridgless dripping atty.

Right now i have the wick at the top about centered over the posts. With the airhole at 90 degrees to the wick. Wick is cheese cloth, coil is 32 kanthal. around 2-2.2 ohms.

Where should I put the coil in relation to the hole to get the most vapor and less throat hit?

looks like this. but my wick is longer and goes down in the well on both sides. These images are from the Rainbow site.

It doesnt look scorched. I have been keeping it wet all day. First sign of it starting to get dry at all I add juice. Ill look at it again though.

EDIT: its a little darker inside the coil, but I dont think its burnt. Im dripping some Burn Out (cinnamon juice) so it gunks kinda quick.

I can pull wick and put another in. Just wanna make sure I have it in the best place.

around 3.8-4. On my kgo 1100 right now. I have a twist, i could use to go a little hotter. I can take off the top and fire it, the coils dont get red hot like its getting too hot(this is wet with juice)

EDIT: the more I look at it. Its possible it is burnt a little right in the middle. I might have the wick to thick and its not wicking through the whole length of the coil.

Soon as I figure out best placement Ill rewick and/or recoil it.

I would say try your air hole perpendicular with the wick in this setup. With the air hole parallel to one of the posts, it looks like that would create some turbulence and give you a bit harsher TH.

Just my opinion, as I'm not a pro by any means. I just built my first RBA today

I did do a ton of reading though :D

yeah thats how im running it right now. i prolly wasnt clear. My cheap camara is broke and im not messing with the wifes good one LOL my hole is just a little lower then the wick.

I could run the wick off to the side of the posts. so it would be closer to the hole. just dont know if this would help any. would have to have longer legs, so not sure thats a good thing. This is my first rba too. I have been trying to read alot for the last week or so on it. Not seeing many where the coil attached in the top of the posts though.

Im getting good vapor and flaver though. I know im close :)

EDIT: ok recoiled and re wicked. I think the wick was too big for the coil. I made this coil off to the side closed to the hole and more in line height wise. Used a toothpick for the coil then threaded the wick through it. Letting it soak up some juice and swell up now. I will report back if its better or not.

gtbb- you were probably right about a scorch. it was a little. because it couldnt wick all way through the coil.

The new coil is bent over to the side of the posts. Opposite the screws, and close to the air hole. Air hole is hitting right in middle of coil, both height wise and length wise. Made the coil around a toothpick, and the wick is not tight in the coil this time. One end is short and goes up just a little ways. Other end goes down and between the post.

So far its working good. Lots of vapor and flavor. My throat is a little soar from this cinnamon all day so ill have to wait till tomorrow to give a more accurate throat feal to it. But its not Harsh like it was.

Thank you for all the guidence. Ill have to play with height of the coil in relation to the hole over the weekend. after my throat feels a little better.

I have one of those: the best position of the air hole is at approx 90deg to the wick, thus ideally blowing toward the mid-center of it.

It's probably worth mentioning that I ended up enlarging a bit the original air hole, for the TH was too harsh anyway... just be careful not overdoing it, if you choose to follow suit, or else the draw will be too airy.

also making a fatter wick sometimes help smooth it out, i use 3mm now in everything and it seems much smoother and more vapor.

How do you make your coils? As in, just one thread, doubled over wick for two threads? Doubled over again for 4? I was wondering how much that makes a difference. I've only used 3mm silica so far, and the smoothest vape came from doubling over the wick twice for 4 layers. The one now is just a simple loop for 2 layers and seems harsher, but wasn't sure what variable is causing that.

It worked pretty good all day today. The larger coil (4wraps of 32kanthal) off to the side right in front of the hole is working well. The wick isnt chocked off this time. Its staying whitish except for the short end heading upwards. Its turning a little dark but its just full of juice haha

I also added a thin oring between the lower and middle sections to help with adjusting the air hole. you can see it and it takes away a little from the looks, but it works really well :)

Thanks everyone for chiming it. it helps alot.
