If your coil is gunked with burnt sugars, non of the above methods work at riding that burnt sugar. Below is a mesh strip taken from a Freemax Triple Mesh coil head that was left over night in a bath of vodka

I see no need to rinse with water after soaking in grain alcohol (even decent vodka has very little taste) and I even drink the vodka after (juice residue and all) PID is correct won't get rid of heavy gunk on coil. I do dry them very well after. Citric acid would need a good rinse though.
