Not that this would be applicable to any and all rebuildables, and certainly not a controlled or all-encompassing experiment on my part, but... I've fixed coils as high as 8mm above the positive deck on Kayfun/Russians (using cotton wick).
I've found that, other than possibly reducing the opportunity for juice to creep into the air tube/screw, having a slightly greater net quantity of wick, and a small increase in resistance due to the longer tails - there's no real difference in the quality of the vape.
Saying that, I am in the process of making independent coil mount spacer blocks - to raise the the coil attachment 6mm higher above the deck - with the original intention being to allow for shorter coil tails (with the previously mentioned horizontal coil) and for vertical coils with no need for a top-of-coil, downward tail offset.
Single blocks have been made by others for the vertical coil application - I'm simply making a block for both +/-.
The unintended consequence of this, would be allowing the use of a standard horizontal coil, close to touching the chimney top cap... should one wish it. ;-)
