I tried round Kanthal wire in varying gauges and found it really difficult to get it working. Switched to Ribbon and haven't looked back.
There are a lot of people on UKVapers who are liking it...Post 67 is my AGA-T... Have a look and don't look back!!

Just remember that if your using a Vamo it will have a minimum resistance on the atty of around I think 1.3ohms. You might be better off with 4/5 turns of 0.5x0.1 Kanthal ribbon.
sorry some of the terms i am a little confused with still 4/5? not understanding this sorry i am still very new to vaping but i want to learn and get the best vape i can without breaking the bank, btw that coil does look impressive

My AGA works great with plain old kanthal 30gauge. I have heard that ribbon doesnt make much of a difference. Im not willing to try just yet, since its quite a bit more expensive than normal kanthal.

thanks for the help i was just watching some how to's and find that most peoples opinion on nichrome is that it does not last or that it is just plain ol inferior to kanthol. i found that east side vapes has a wicking beginner kit if sorts with all three types if wire and some choice on wicks as well it comes with silica wick and 325 and 400 mesh looks like a good buy for me to try my hand and find the best fit, for 10 bucks what have i got to lose, also what is the recomended number of wraps or is that just user defined by what they like
The type and length of coil (hence number of wraps) are primarily used to determine resistance of coil.
So in general, people have a favorite wattage range, and build their coil based on that. You will need to be fairly efficient at Ohm's laws and similar physics to avoid headaches with RBAs.

I have no experience with the Kanthal ribbon wire but it looks fantastic. I can tell ya this though. A lot of folks out there are using just regular round Kanthal 32 gauge for their RBAs. I for one haven't had any luck with it. Get it glowing just perfect then bamo. Out of nowhere an hour later, hotspot and blow the coil. Someone here did recommend that I try 28 gauge round kanthal as that would yeild better results. Can't say because I haven't received it yet but it does sound promising. If ya don't go with the kanthal ribbon wire, ya might want to give the 28 gauge round kanthal a shot. Good luck.

What happened to just good old 30? especially on a regulated device, 28 requires too many wraps and 32 too few.
I've heard some folks using 30 as well with good results. I think 28 was suggested because it is thicker and less prone to hotspots.
I agree. Not crazy about trying to wrap the 28 gauge 16 times just to get a 2.2 ohm coil.
I use 32 gauge and I can admit that it is hard to work with at times. its real easy to pop those coils if you're not careful. I also have 28 gauge nichrome wire -works great but I need too many wraps to get it working on the vamo than I'd like. I'd imagine 30 gauge kanthal would be a good median

28 is too low resistance for anything that isn't a mech.
The way I've come to understand it, the larger gauge doesn't reach as high of temps as a similarly wrapped higher resistance wire. Hence people pushing 12+ watts without burnt liquid.
I've been using kanthal-a1 30awg on my AGAs + Provari with great success.

Ribbon isn't expensive....£4.50 in the UK ($6.75) for a 10m roll. Should last a couple of years.
A 4/5 wrap means its wrapped around the coil almost 5 times. Depends which side you view it from.
IMO ribbon produces marginally better performance due to its increased coverage on the wick but is incredibly easy to work with. Wrapping it takes about 1 minute and then you just pulse the power on for a couple of seconds and then off again. Repeat for a couple of minutes and they should all be glowing evenly. The pulsing allows the oxidation under the non glowing coils to build up until they're glowing.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you on that one. I know quite a few folks here using 28 gauge on their AGAs on Vamos, Zmax's, etc... with no complaints.
Just takes more wraps.
I agree here, and it's even easier on a provari, which can for as low as a .9 ohm coil.
However, mech is the best for using 28 sure to the ultra low resistance....I generally use 28 on mech and 32 with regulated devices.

So if I wanted to use Kanthal ribbon on an AGA T2 double wicked, what kind of mesh and ribbon should I order?
I'm thinking #400 gauge mesh and 0.5mmx0.1mm ribbon but is this actually a good idea? I want a very hot coil because I am not just vaping e-juice, I have a few essential oils that make the liquid really thick and need a much higher temperature to vaporize or they will clog up everything - it solidifies on the wick if the temp is too low.
How would a person get the best wicking with thick liquids, and the highest temperature possible? Thin ribbon + double wicking? Coarse guage or fine gauge mesh? Please give me plain numbers I can click and order, I'm not too acquainted with how this whole thing works, AGA-T is my first RBA.

Personally,I had no issues with 32 round kanthal. I have a drill bit that fits the wick hole perfect. I do anywhere from 4-6 wraps ( mood)on the drill bit and get a perfect coil every time.While the coil is still on the drill bit I place it in the wick hole and fasten the ends of the coil to the posts. Now I have a coil that it's perfectly aligned with the wick hole. Remove the drill bit slowly.
I then take my stainless mesh wick I've already oxidized and fitted and slide it through the coil and wick hole.

helps if you remove the unused screw. otherwise you get a vacuum effect with thicker liquids. Thin ones not such an issue.
I also instead well use three pieces of 1mm natural hemp twine instead of ss mesh. It's a little trickier but, not a fan of the ss mesh. This I do with the aga apart. Feed the twine through the wick hole leaving extra on both sides. assemble. Make your coil of choice on the drill bit but, now you have to slide your coil over the wick gently and attach. Worth it imo. With the extra wick inside the tank you can just slide some out and have new wick.

It's easy to get 2 pieces of 1mm twine in from the top but, that isn't enough wick. Needs 3 and that's impossible with the coil installed already. Maybe with a specialized tool...
