Ok ...so I was going to try and make a Cold heat soldering Iron work as an 'atomizer'.....but realized the idea wasn't so good at all once I put my thinking head on and thought some more about the electrical side of it. ......so I gave up on the idea of using it as an atomizer....... but still I converted it into an e-cig anyway (with an RN 4072 atomizer) it works ok. It's actually a very good thing to mod....probably one of the easiest....very cheap and comes with a nice little carrying case....... if you leave the front led connected you also know the atomizer coil has broken if it doesn't light up!

Pete - you just used it as a battery back with standard atty ?

Hi kinaba.......yes ...after thinking about it I realised you would still have to use nichrome wire of about the same thickness as in a standard atomizer....u know the story ....resistance, watts, amps, volts..heat.....it's all a balance to get the best battery life. ......it was easy enough to turn into an e-cig though. ..lol

Well at least that Cold Heat soldering gun is good for something! LOL

I tried doing some soldering with it and they really aren't very good...I suppose they could be handy for some simple soldering situations but not for general use.........it would only have sat in my toolbox for years and every time I went to use it I would need a new set of batteries......vaping with it is a much better use for it.....lol

Hey, I kinda like it! Why didn't it work?

You could basically get any piece of metal hot enough with it to produce vapour....but it's all about how much power it drains from the batteries to get the heat...to make it economical on batteries at that voltage you would really have to end up making a coil about the same size as a normal atomizer anyway. ....The chineese have done all the sums and a normal atty coil is the probably the optimum size for the heating coil.

I have to say the cold heat soldering iron is a great and cheap thing to use to make a mod, probably one of the easiest things to make a mod out of.. and I think it actually looks quite good and feels good in the hand. I am using 4 ..1.2 AA size Ni mh batteries which actually chuck out just over 5 volts fully charged and is producing tons of vapour...but you could easily put a dummy battery in and reduce the voltage.

There is even a computer chip inside....I haven't got a clue what it does but I left it in....lol

That looks great! I think this is the bes mod yet. Designed for you hand, holds plenty of battery power, intregarted switch and LED.

Was it easy to add the atomizer connector or did you hardwire a atomizer?

It's quite hard to explain how I made the connections for the atomizer...although it would probably have been far better and very simple to use one of those power connectors that most people use.......I soldered a pin onto a connection part that's already in the iron to make the centre connection for the atomizer....then used a springy piece of metal that was also already a part of the iron for making connection to the soldering tip and I used it in a way that the atomizer just 'plugs' into the iron. The only thing I need to do now is replace the slider on/off switch with a momentary button....although I am not having any problems using the slider switch and the light lets me know if it's on or off it does mean I still have to be careful not to accidentally leave it on.... so a button would be better.

But like I say ..it's a very cheap almost ready made mod that I think looks pretty cool and to me it even looks as if it was 'designed' to be an e-cig.......it even comes with it's own carry case.

This was a good try. i have one of these. You are correct they suck for soldering but with a little more thought. This mod may work. i will have to play. Thanks for sharing

Oh another reason why the soldering tip cannot be used as an 'atomizer' is that there is an awful taste that comes off of the graphite soldering tip. That was the deciding factor in giving up on turning it into an atomizer.

But quite honestly.....this is the perfect thing for any modder to convert into an E-cig, using the atomizer of their choice. It's just so cheap and so easy to convert and ticks all the boxes of what you want in a mod and the thing I really like is that it even looks as if it could be a factory designed E-cig...instead of looking like some kind of weird mod.

For anyone wanting to make an easy, great, mod for themselves....I 100% recommend making it out of one of these.

Hi scintar....I am hoping you will simply turn yours into an e-cig using normal atomizers.....I am dying to see how someone else finds it as a mod.

I think it's so good that everyone should be turning one of these soldering Irons into an e-cig it's perfect. Forget about passthroughs and all that stuff ..the four AA size rechargeable batteries it can hold will last all day on a charge no matter how much you vape.

Way cool. And if caught using it publicly, you can say you're medicating your gum disease with vapor and cold heat.

Lol that's not a bad idea either TBob...the great thing is that instead of looking like something I have modded it really does look like something professionally designed to do what it's doing.

Hi Pete, ive been looking at my cold heat soldering iron (if you can call it a soldering iron lol) today and i cant seem to figure out how you have made the modifications needed to attach the atty. Please could you post some pics of the modifications made and a brief discription of the process.

Thanks for your time :)

Hi Anunnaki...... I believe someone else is also making a mod of one these soldering irons and they are going to do a pictorial of how they did it and also a video review. I sure think it makes a great e-cig.

Yes, this does look great.......would you please tell me where I can find the pics of the mod and the video review.

I don't know if I can make the change over, but its worth a try. :hubba:
