Hey All,

I am interested in getting a refillable E Cig. I have tried a couple disposable ones and enjoyed them. So I figure I would get easily the same enjoyment out of the next step up.

The issue is I really enjoy going outside to smoke; however, -40 is pretty common weather where I am. Are there any issues operating these in such cold weather? Also are there any models with plastic mouth pieces? I have only heard one review (in person), and that was of the Halo system (just forgot to ask about the mouthpiece).

Any help or advice from somebody living in a similar climate would be great.

Hi and Welcome to ECF!

I dont experience Yukon cold, but it certainly is NOT warm here! I can say that once it gets to 0 or below I experience leaking going from inside to out and vice versa with some tanks. I also learned how much I hate metal drip tips in the winter! lol. I make sure to use atomizers and tanks that take replaceable drip tips if it comes with none or metal so that I can change it out for a Delrin drip tip.

I can tell you in my experience I have the least issue with my Reo going through temp changes. Second least issue is a filled cartomizer. I do bump up the volts or watts to use my device in extreme cold if it is a variable device.

What are you looking for in a device and what price range are you shopping in?

This should help you get started too:

Thanks for the help, I am leaning towards the REO grand, seems there is an all around love for the brand.

I guess getting both atomizer and cartomizer to start out, then making my own decision is the best way to tackle that. I assume I can find drip tips compatible with either.

Price wise it isn't much of a factor, as it seems cheaper than the alternative.

I vape in cold weather quite often myself, so I'll provide my tips. No problems with vaping in those temps, just some challenges you have to be mindful of. I use Kanger Mini-Pro's most of the time on the go and will switch out for a plastic drip tip when the temps drop...but the most important thing is exchangable drip tip if it's metal. I keep my e-cig in an inside pocket to keep it warm...it's important not to let it freeze. You'll also probably notice that it's a cooler vape...it just comes with the territory and not a whole lot you can do about it, but if you can keep the e-cig warm, it helps. Also, be mindful to return it to the warm somewhat frequently...you probably won't want to chain vape for 10 minutes at those temps. Lastly, fill inside...the liquid becomes viscous very quickly and virtually impossible to pour after a minute or so of exposure at those temps.

Good luck! Sub zero vaping is pretty awesome, in my opinion.

I could be wrong but I expect you are going to experience some problems with dry hits in that kind of cold. Battery life will probably be shorter also. It doesn't get anywhere near that cold here and my batteries die quicker, the juice gets thicker and doesn't wick as well whenever it gets below the teens. It's still worth it though! Extra batteries, more time between hits to allow the wick to recover, and try to keep the tank warm between hits!

I am biased, but if I could go back and start all over its what I would have done as opposed to buying eGos, winders, CVI, Lavatube, SVD and MVPs first LOL. Although I do <3 my MVP and it is not collecting any dust. :)

I have a Reo mini and I just ordered a Grand. Its a solid device and it doesnt give me a problem in the cold. If the Mini battery (14500) can hold up at -20 then Im good with it. Make sure to get AW IMR 18650s for the Grand. A good atty that you dont have to build (and they are rather cheap) is over at Kidney puncher. I use 1.5 (you want unsealed for a bottom feeder) Any 510 drip tip will fit a 510 cart or atty :)

Another cold weather must have for it (best part is its free, awesome AND hand made!) http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/reos-mods/464607-covers-your-reos.html

You won't be disappointed with a Reo, for sure. I'm in Wisconsin, and have had our share of -20 to -30F temps in the winter (any colder than that I don't think matters, it's still unholy cold, right?). January vaping SUCKED (well, when I was outside), since all I had was a variety of clearos (top coil, bottom coil, dual coil). Didn't matter--a clearo will NOT work--dry hit, no hit, leaking. Got my Reo a few weeks ago--SUCCESS! It works in frigid weather.

Now, the battery (or any battery) will not perform optimally in the cold (keep your gear insulated against your body or inside the truck, or whatever if you can when not in use). Always have extra batteries kept in a temp controlled area that you have access (if possible). Also, you "load" the juice as needed by squonking the juice up into the coil/wick, so there's no leaking or gurgling due to the cold. And yeah, plastic/acrylic/delrin material for your drip tip.

I'm sure there must be something other than a Reo for extreme cold environments. However, I have no experience with those. I only know Reo with the RM2 atty WORKS. Good luck to you :vapor:.

I just had a brilliant (insane?) thought. It would require safe testing, but wouldn't a cover with a slot for a hand warmer keep the battery at a warmer temp to operate optimally. Of course, I in no way condone or suggest or advise anyone to do this based on my random thought (Disclaimer: it may get TOO warm, test the temperature it reaches without a battery inside, first). But it's an idea...We people of the Polar Vortex zone do what we gotta do...

Right on! Thanks every one, very helpful.
Get a REO keep it warm, uses short and I should be good.

Great forum, super informative, great community!

Yep, that sums it up. CreepyLady and I are particularly chatty ladies, so you have seen ! Glad you understood the message.
