It takes 1000 genius minds years to create one small positive change in the world, and it only takes one idiot a weekend to screw it all up.

I feel bad for this guy, but we can guess where this might lead. It's another case of a hot coffee incident at the McDonald's drive-thru. I sincerely hope the manufacturer and vendor can prove adequate documentation so the case never gets any traction.

Didn't Puresmoker use to sell Cr123 size cells but removed them when the stacked battery issue bloomed? They advertise the Protegy as a 3.7 volt device now. How many bought earlier models just to stack? If someone you know has an earlier model using Puresmoker stacked batteries (the ones they used to sell) for 6 volt vaping, how do you duplicate that?
Buy the the improved V3.1. But where do you buy the batteries they used to sell for the earlier models?
Did Puresmoker "RECALL" all the earlier models and CR123 cells, or just leave them out there? Is that not implying it's OK to stack?

Last time I went into a RS (in CO), I looked at their battery section - I didnt see any rechargeable batteries of that size, or 123's either. Did mebbe this guy buy alkaline? Or try to recharge a non-rechargeable battery? One of those would be my guess

They do sell CR123A Li-ions Search Result

Here is another write up where the author notes that the language says "batteries" and therefore indicates that these were stacked CR123 batts. Enercell is the Radio Shack brand and they do sell CR123s that look to be un protected and not safe chemistry. The one thing I did pick up is that it seems this happened some time ago, prior to the Florida incident (at least that what 1 article indicated). Link to the second article/post here

maybe if the vendors made sure the mods all HAD to be sold WITH the correct batteries that would help. There are too many people that are trying to play McGyver and don't really know what they're doing!
*ALL PV'S SHOULD COME WITH BATTERIES ALREADY LOADED*
I don't want to see any ammunition going to the Pharm co's that wants to shut down vaping.

Yes they used to sell a 6V kit with Tenergy cells.

Me...I have both runs of the Prodigy.

If someone you know has an earlier model using Puresmoker stacked batteries (the ones they used to sell) for 6 volt vaping, how do you duplicate that?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. Duplicate in terms of what?

Buy the the improved V3.1. But where do you buy the batteries they used to sell for the earlier models?

Online...many vendors still carry Tenergy batteries but I no longer use them. I only use AW lifepo4's.

Did Puresmoker "RECALL" all the earlier models and CR123 cells, or just leave them out there? Is that not implying it's OK to stack?

No recall that I know of. No it's not implying it's ok to stack. It's left up to the user and to read their site for battery information in terms of what to use. IMO, puresmoker left it up to the user as to which voltage they preferred.

I never want to hear about anyone getting hurt... I'm truly sorry that someone trying to make the switch had this happen to them. Keeping in mind that there is a lot of speculation here, I feel like we should file suit against this fellow for slandering our rep. I know that is a bit extreme.
I said 2 months ago when I completely familiarized myself with the battery safety pages here, that there needs to be some kind of ECF certification, before anybody can buy anything above a simple starter kit.
I'm one of those guys educating every person that shows interest in my PV, and now for the next month, every person I talk to is going to say " those are the things that blow up in your face".
We are going to get shut down because of people crying for their personal safety with us in their general vicinity, nevermind those that assume were exhaling smoke.
Roly makes it very clear about going after vendors that do not provide proper equipment. How about protecting vendors that are clearly getting railroaded?

If I were in the e-cig business ...
I wouldn't be selling any e-cigs that a consumer could buy replacement batteries
down at Radio Shack.

The average consumer will NOT read instructions and will NOT research.

Our movement recently has really started to get some positive press...
It won't take too many more "exploding e-cig" stories to knock our movement
back to the Stone Age.

I don't see this guy winning anything. It clearly states on their site to use protected or safe chemistry cells. The guy choose to use the wrong batteries...that was HIS fault and not the fault of the mod or mod maker. Stupidity in not using the proper cells is the only thing that was faulty.

^^ This. I sincerely feel bad that this man is injured, and am grateful that he wasnt killed, no doubt. But he misused the product which led to the problem.

Really quite a shame if you ask me. I have been using an original Prodigy for close to 3 years now and have never had a problem. I do use proper batteries with it. Another isolated incident which unfortunatly happened to one of my favorite suppliers.

I hope the man injured recovers and another lesson in proper battery use is gained from this.

The website(puresmoker.com) says to use an AW17670 under additional information. Im sure it states this in the owners manual or at least saying use protected batts only, which should be located on their site. I tried to look at it, but was not avail. maybe due to legal issues it may have been taken down. He bought enercell aka energizer/rayovac batts from radio shack. Who does that!?!:facepalm: Dont mean to sound high brow, but if you can afford an $85 mod I think you can afford an $11 battery.

Almost like if I were to put regular unleaded gas in my cadillac which says premium only, it will run bad and eventually foul the plugs up. I cant sue cadillac or the fuel company because Im ignorant. If I couldnt afford the premium fuel I would've bought a cadillac.

Betting that the batteries he was using were unprotected since they exploded. Which is not intended for tube mods, as usual the media fails to mention that if the proper protected batteries are used the device is completely safe.

I dont see this case going very far, but im sure some overspending politician out there will just use this and similar cases to try to regulate ecig mods and somehow get their fingers in the cookie jar. Sad to see how uneducated greed and inaccurate reporting can hurt the image of the safety of ecigs.

I have to admit that's an assumption on my part. There was an incident with a Prodigy reported here on ECF shortly before the Florida story broke. I believe this is the thread, post #32 to be specific. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/puresmoker/79545-so-discussion-exploding-batteries.html It seems like the timing and location matches, so I ran with it. It could however be a totally different incident. That post interestingly says they were LifePo batteries though, so I'm not 100% sure.
