Confused about topping off

I hope this question hasn't been asked a million times but even after all I've read hear I'm not totally clear about topping off. I have a Joye 510 right out of the mail today. Haven't even gotten to use it yet. But after reading about the nasty start up taste I'm trying to get prepared. I have some liquid ordered - hope it gets here fast! I don't have blank carts coming yet - that's on my list for my next order but now i want to wait until I actually try it out and see if I need anything else. I have a feeling my starter kit isn't quite going to cut it after all the reading I've done tonight. So my questions are:

Is topping off just a few drops added straight to the cartridge?
Is that okay to just add to the the carts that come with the device?
And is that just for adding juice or for VG as well?

Any other excellent advice is much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

The nasty start up taste is a shipping fluid that goes on the atomizer. It can vary in it's intensity. There are a few things one can do. One, the safest, is you can just blow out the atomizer with your mouth from both ends and then only puff the ecig rather than inhale for the first 'session'. Or you could, if you have some 151 or a clear vodka and put some of that on the atomizer to wash off the 'priming/shipping fluid'. And then blow that out - again from both ends and let it dry and then screw it in and I'd still only puff for 5 draws or so and then try inhaling.

Topping off is adding drops to the cartridge filler - white polyfiller. You can also drip a few drops on the atomizer bridge and I don't drip with VG but some do. When you top off you should see moisture on top of the filler but it shouldn't be 'bubbled up'. Iow, you can still see some of the filler but it is moist. When you've gone to far - you just have a bubble of juice on top of the filler. And it is ok to add to the carts that came with the device. Of course if the juice is different than what the prefilled carts were you're going to get a 'blend' but if you vape off the prefilled juice then it shouldn't be a problem, unless you have menthol prefilled then you are always going to taste that with that cartridge.

And if you're not getting vapor on the 510 either the atty is too flooded or it is too dry. So careful when first dripping - only 2 or 3 drops to start and then try it out. You can 'huff' it a bit, like you're smoking a pipe where you're drawing and puffing and not inhaling for a few times and then take a drag, inhale, etc.

Thank you that actually made sense to me! Honestly so much of what I'm reading is confusing right now, I'm sure all the answers are here somewhere but understanding them isn't as easy as finding them. I'm excited though - can't wait to try it out!
