Confused: Cobra vs. AGA-T+

Let me start off by breaking down my build process.
400 mesh 40mm x 50mm
28 Gauge Kanthal
3/4 wraps
Rolled solid tight wick
Traditional oxidation Quench/juice wick 3 times

On my AGA-T+ this worked perfectly.

However, on my Cobra this did not work out so well.

After working out the hot spots on my Cobra, I drip juice on the coil then pulse it a few times. From there I put juice in the tank, tilt it, and pulse it a few times so that juice gets into the wick.

Yet while the wick is wet with a full tank of juice, the coils continue to glow evenly and I get the worst burnt taste ever.

Why does this work perfectly on my AGA-T+ and not on my Cobra?

I'm confused.

cant comment on the oxidation as i dont do it but how did you wrap the coil? is is snug on the wick?
the cobra seems to work slightly better with a wick thats not so tight or has a small channel up the center. i use 500 SS but almost same dimensions. 50mm wide with the wick almost same height as the post.
did you leave the fill screw in or out. with the small tank the fill screw strangles the wick faster also sometimes.

Leaving the fill screw out didn't make a difference at all. I even tried 500 SS mesh and that didn't even work.

I've mastered my AGA-T+ but I can't get this Cobra to work for this life of me.

i too transitioned to cobra from mini DID and AGA-T2 and also had a problem building cobra... i had most successful build when i rolled the wick little bit smaller than the wick hole on the cobra and wrapped coil pretty tight(using 28g kanthal)... but i think its takes practice to get it working right. one thing i didnt like about cobra is the fill hole(air hole) being not directly above the wick hole when using single wick setup ;***(

Did you try tilting 4 o'clock without the cap and see if juice is flowing down to the tip of the wick? If any of the coils start glowing even with juice on it, then you have a hotspot. You'll have to play around with the coils until it's gone. One thing I do before putting juice in the tank is to make sure I drip juice on the coil while holding it vertical. I do this serval times. It should produce vapor for a good 5-6 seconds before drying out. If any of your coils start glowing too soon, then it's a hotspot. And if it's working good doing this and your still having the same problem when the tank is filled with juice, then the problem is with your wick.

I used to do the Petar K method, but it's very hard to consistently make a perfect sized wick all the time for me. There would always be one part of the coil that would always barely touch the wick and cause a hotspot. I now just do it the basic wrap with just a dry wick ( burn it with a lighter to stiffen the wick if juice is on it) and make sure all the coil is touching all around the wick without choking it. The same method that Zen uses. It has been working allot better for me.

I just tried another build. I dripped juice on it vertically pulsed it several times and it worked.

Put juice in the tank, tilted it, pulsed it, watched juice flow down the wick, and all of the coils were still glowing evenly.

When I tried to take a vape, I practically had to tilt my mod at 11 o'clock to get it to work correctly.

I don't mind tilting but at 11 o'clock is just ridiculous.

If it's my wick, I'm totally at a loss at how to roll it differently. I'm doing the same exact rolling method on my AGA-T+ which has never caused me an issue.

I'm using the Petar K method to wrap my coil. Now that you mention this has caused you issues. I'm betting that's my problem as well.

Next build I'm going to just wrap the coil on the wick and see how that goes.

Wizard,
I cant do the Petar Method with consistancy, so I have been mostly hand wrapping my coils from the begining....and it has work fine for me.
I also use both AGA-T2 and Cobra 5ml RBAs. For me, they both work very well and produce great flavor and vapor. For the price, it is hard to find a better RBA than the AGA-T, I just really love those little attys!!

Judging by your pic your coils look alittle loose on the wick, I would hand wrap a coil and tighten them up a bit. Also on the cobra, roll a little thinner of a wick (solid or straw--what ever is your preference, both work for me). Your wick does look a little dry, a thinner wick will help alleviate that. I also take the fill screw out of all my RBAs....it just seems to work better for me. YMMV, Good Luck

I was hand wrapping my coils on the cobra, 60mm wide with 400 mesh and 80mm wide on 500 mesh. Both rolled tight with little to no hole in the middle.

I got tired of the dry burns and wanted to be able to remove the wick, so am now working on the drill bit method. When I wrap on the drill bit I try to do so slightly loose. I use the 3/32 drill bit, and there is a slight space still in the wick hole. Then I take my mesh wick, which I use 75mm wide 500 mesh, and see if it slides in fairly easy while gently twisting if needed. If to big I just roll a little tighter. If the wick is to tight and slides in to easy then I just roll the opposite way some and it will loosen it up some to fit the hole better.

So far both hand and drill bit work well for me. With the drill bit I am still working on being able to remove the wick easy, often even after running under hot water I have to just recoil cause it won't slide back out, have had it work once so still on that learning curve.

Not sure if this will help, but good luck. I really like my cobra, the only genesis I have and use.

i also had no luck with a solid 500 wick on my cobra...is it possible i rolled it too tight? i used mostly 20pg/80vg juices

"No luck" in what way? Dry hits or ...?
I've got a pretty solid wick in mine (45mm x 70mm) & it'll feed 70/30, 50/50, 30/70 and 100% VG w/o running dry.

not saying it is the problem but one thing i see overlooked a lot is the grain within the mesh, it should run top to bottom.

in testing i see a difference with wicking speeds when rolled across the grain. will it kill the vapor probably not but since i made sure to always roll top to bottom i never seem to have a dry hit anymore.
