How exactly does a Democrat in the House think she's going to introduce anything? John Boehner is the only one who can bring something to the floor, and if you ain't trying to repeal "Obamacare", destroy women's reproductive rights or name a post office - your bill will never see the light of day.

So Jackie, thanks for playing Congressional LOL - you can take a seat now.

"The industry has lured children and teenagers with aggressive marketing tactics to use its products. With flavors like gummy bear, cotton candy, and chocolate cake, our kids are literally vaping these things up," Speier said in a statement.

"...our teens are lusting after these objects..."

Teens lusting after ecigs?!!? The ANTZ infection is spreading. It may already be an epidemic.

I'd never heard of this woman, so I clicked on the link to her page...

"Fighting for the people of San Francisco and the Peninsula".

Ah, that explains it! The progressive agenda has gone amok up there, they ban everything.

All kidding aside, I find it interesting that this would be introduced with the FDA deeming regs out there. Only additional thing this does is ban flavors (which the FDA will probably do anyway if the deeming regs are passed, IMO).

Ah, I'm lusting for my mod.... gotta go!

Yes but as flavors are not permitted. How did menthol pass. Just curious about the history of it.

wiki:

In the United States, menthols comprise about 30% of the total cigarette market.[7] Menthol cigarettes are purchased disproportionately by African-American smokers, with 80% of African-American smokers consuming menthol cigarettes primarily.[8][9]

A 2008 study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates that 33.9 percent of smokers use menthol cigarettes, compared to 31 percent in 2004. Much of the increase comes from young people.[10]

A Federal Trade Commission report released September 21, 2012 said menthol cigarettes had gone from 27 percent in 2008 to 22 percent in 2010.[11]

Banning menthol might be considered 'racist'.

It's not discriminatory because there are well known and acknowledged health disparieties among white vs. minority outcomes. Same for men vs. women and income status, public vs. private insurance. Studies are done on all factors.

A lot of the issues with menthol are the same with flavored ecigs. They are basically claiming that what might be ok / good for individuals does not mean it's good for public health (i.e. FDA crazy-speak). I find it interesting this has been the subject of FDA regulation for over 4 years now and still hasn't resulted in action. The menthol question also got 3 public comment extensions. There might be a few lessons ...

I think most public health authorities recognize there are "addiction prone" people / personalities. I wonder if I had not had access to cigarettes as a teen and become addicted, what other substance would I have been drawn to?

She is my district, and has just been educated.

Right On StandingOnTheMoon!

Posting to the ECF is Great. And having all those Threads where people go Back and Forth, or call people ANTZ is I guess Par for the Course.

But Getting Active and sending Information and or Comments to One's Reps is the Way that Change is going to be Effected.

I did a search this morning on Speier's bill to see if the full text has been posted yet, and now I'm confused (possibly simply because it's morning, but more probably because of the way our government and members of Congress work).

My search on govtrack.us was for "speier cigarette," and all I found was this: https://www.govtrack.us/events/track-something?feed=billsearch:text=cigarette

It doesn't show her introducing a new bill, it shows her name being added as a co-sponsor to H.R. 4325: Protecting Children from Electronic Cigarette Advertising Act of 2014, which was introduced by Elizabeth Esty (D-CT5) on 3/27/14. (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr4325)

So, is there some funny business going on here w/ Speier's PR machine, or do I just need more coffee and a clearer head?

That's not what some minorities think. See the comments of Innis in the link and others. I can find many more and while I'm familiar with the 'science', racism is sometimes defined by how some individuals react, or by the results of an action rather than it's intent. One could say and has been said in a multitude of posts here, that the deeming doc discriminates against the vaper/ecig small vendor minority, and favors the smoking/BT majority.

If menthol is banned, you'll see a backlash along these lines.
