My buddy has a hard time with any 510 setup I've put in front of him. I whip out a 306 with a Cannon drip tip and he's good to go. On 510's he says it kills his throat and he chokes everytime he try's that setup. Even off of the tiniest draw. I think it's really in a persons preference. There's so many things that can be the cause of a new vapor getting there .... kicked by it IMO.

I had this same problem of coughing everytime I took a puff from my ecig. I got various nic strength's of prefilled cartos with mine and when I switched from high to a low I didn't cough. I've been exclusively vaping for 9 days now and have used the high nic cartos with no coughing. I think it's an adjustment time for our lungs and brain to something new...as well as a slightly different inhaling technique.

My dingbat ex-BF (who I live with) still smokes his Newports despite me trying to convert him (it's got to be on his terms, yes.. I know how this works).

Anyway, I did notice that he tries to direct inhale on the PV vs. drawing in the vapor before inhaling. I explained that it's more like a cigar than a cigarette - if you draw hard on it you're going to fry your throat. I hand him my 1000 mAh eGo battery with a DC clear carto on it, with my measley 12mg. PG/VG mix juice, and what does he do... takes a full direct hit, coughs his fool head off, and says "it burns".

I was not a heavy smoker, and was used to smoking lights (the strongest analogs I ever smoked were the occasional Djarum black - never drew hard on those either). Vaping came pretty easy to me - and I'm much happier now that I've found the right amount of vapor + flavor + nicotine.

The boy loves his cancer sticks. I think that for him it's going to be finding him the right tasting juice combined with strong enough nicotine - and a desire to keep working at it.

The first few days for me were pretty rough. It felt liked I coughed more than I did with my first ciggies. But as time went by I found my vaping groove. The only reason I perservered is because it felt the same as when I quit with patches the first time, I nearly threw up from the coughing as my body expelled toxins. So is it the vaping or your lungs throwing out all that garbage, I don't know.
