Copper isn't harmful on contact. Sometimes, prolonged (and by that I mean over many years) internal exposure, such as some metalworkers get from inhaling copper dust, or the very old, and no longer used copper based IUD birth control implants would eventually cause an individual to develop an allergy to the metal.
