I use CVS sterile rolled cotton without boiling. I figure why boil when they stuff this in your body to soak up fluids during surgery. Works great and all I taste is my juice.

My CVS rolled cotton makes dust when torn in the light and has fibers much shorter than cotton balls.
It wicks and vapes good but is more difficult to work w/ than cotton ball fibers.
Does that sound familiar?

Yes, CVS was out of cotton balls when I stopped by so I got the next best thing  I might pick up some cotton balls next time I am in CVS but at this point the rolled cotton works so well I am not in any hurry to try the cotton balls.

I'm just using some organic stuff I got off Amazon. No boiling, just roll it up and go. I've found I needed to use less than half of the rolled out cotton, probably around 1/3 to get it threaded properly but otherwise, flavor is great and I have no complaints. The only thing I have found through a youtube video is I just juice one side of the wick and make sure it wicks all the way through the coil to make sure I didn't make it too tight. That's about all I've got though.

Cotton was actually just harvested. It'd be hard to find pods now, but you can easily walk around a field nearby my house and get more than you can carry off the ground. Alabama clay might require a couple of water changes with boiling, and cotton is already so cheap in stores..

I like cotton balls. Already wrapped in rather long pieces. It's really easy to work with. I can use a cotton ball for any diameter coil I'd want to wrap.

I think I still like ekowool more, but the price, and how easy it is to work with, cotton is what I'll probably stick with...

Yea couldn't agree more suspectK. I was trying to find some Milkweed pods to harvest the silky "floss" they carry inside. HAH. Didn't find any but I bet they'd work great :(

That being said, I really do like cotton. I am having one problem though, after about 1-2 hours the wicks start to turn brown from the fluffy ends IN towards the coil. Once it reaches the coil area the flavor gets highly muddled. Not muted. Muddled. And gross sweet. I think my juice is caramelizing because I use a super tiny RDA called the Optimus S and the heat contained in this little sucker turns everything into brown sugar. Pretty quickly too. Doesn't happen with Ekowool though.

I'm working with 500 SS Mesh / Cotton hybrid wicks now to see if I can't remedy the situation. Really like the setup I got going on. The first 10-20 hits off a fresh cotton wick is AMAZING but I find myself growing more and more frustrated at the frequency which I need to replace them to maintain.

Thoughts? Input?

I'll likely just order some 2mm Ekowool as the 3mm I have is too big to stuff in my coils now. I've got 5+ feet of 3mm Hollow Ekowool and no use for it. Anybody wanna trade? :D

If that doesn't work, I'm diving in and getting an Igo-T.

UPDATE: My 500 SS/Cotton hybrid wick works .... AMAZING! I still get a *little* caramelized liquid but far far less than using straight cotton wicks. Not only that, but each hit is as clean tasting as the last. I chain vaped it for around 1 hour without a problem.

Here's a photo of the setup I came up with, juiced but unvaped. 28GA Kanthal, 9-10 wraps on 3/32" @ 1.3Ω Mini/Micro Coil. SS Mesh for wick with cotton ball buffers to keep the tails saturated. Working flawlessly.

Feel free to give it a go yourself if anyone is having the same problem. Just be warned... you should know how to oxidize SS like a champ or you will get shorts and low-loads on APVs. General rules apply as per cotton wicks: Keep that sucker saturated after oxidation and it will be smooth sailing.

Input is appreciated and no, I don't get any shorts with this build despite the fact that the SS wick touches the inner edge of my RDA top piece. Like I said. Torch that sucker SO WELL that The Human Torch would be jealous :p

Vape well, vape often :vapor:
