I coughed a lot. Then I coughed some more. This was on a 24mg cigalike.
It took me a long time to get used to it.
Now, I despise juul; everything they do and stand for .. but if it's juul or smoking, Juul wins. I'd rather somebody found an answer that doesn't involve a greedy company who sell a product that is an excuse to fleece desperate people of money, but hey..I also don't like the idea of someone making excuses not to vape.
I would buy him a Justfog minifit, fill it with some tasty juice and tell him to man up.

Vaping for me just satisfied the hand to mouth/inhale-exhale habit. Nicotine was another factor, but I had gone from Marlboro Reds to Merit ultra lights over time. The Merits took my smoking habit from a pack a day to two packs a day. Something had to give if I was going to live much past retirement.

Vaping was the cure. Once I got used to vapor instead of smoke it became my new and permanent replacement for the smokes. It takes a while to settle in but it will happen. Before long your vaping habit will be the comfortable replacement for the smokes. I started vaping in April 2010 and my last smoke was in April 2011 and by that time I was down to 6 a day for almost a year. It was easy by then to just not buy another pack and vape as needed to satisfy the nic requirement.

One of the bennies of vaping is that your doctor will see the difference in your chest X-ray. Mine went from partly cloudy to completely clear in short order. It's been that way since shortly after I got off the smokes.

XtraSpesh, like many have said you always seem to cough when you first switch over from smoking to vaping. Also found out very soon I was a DTL vaper.

But also some components of e liquids such as the flavorings, sweeteners and PG / VG mix can cause issues. Like high PG is associated with throat hit, and some folks have a sensitivity to VG.

So a starting point is what flavour would your partner be looking for, and try at least a 70 VG / 30 PG level. The high VG may make it more palatable.

Also, have you got them to try a mod with a TCR or temperature mode, it's something I now look for in a mod as I can't do without it. It's wonderful.

First and foremost, if he doesn't really want to quit, there isn't a setup on the planet that will get him to.

My wife was a complicated case as well. She had the same cough response and complained that even when she could vape cravings weren't satisfied. It turned out that most of that cough response was due to a near constant post nasal drip (PND) caused by enlarged adenoids. Essentially the numbing effect on the throat from regular smoke was able to mask the symptoms, but vaping doesn't have that effect so triggered coughing. If your husband has a lot of PND perhaps he should see an ENT. Smoking can also mask symptoms of early stages of throat cancer so it might be good to be checked anyway.

Also the wife couldn't handle the throat hit from freebase nic, so we had to use salts. Considering Juul seemed to somewhat work for your husband, and it uses salts, that may be what he needs as well. Just in lower concentrations than Juul has.

In order to get the vape to satisfy her cravings we had to mix in some WTA. WTA is Whole Tobacco Alkaloids and contains some of the missing parts from tobacco that some people seem more addicted to. This helps with cravings that straight nic just won't stop.

If you are willing to do DIY juice, we can help with recipes and concentrations. For equipment I would probably start with whatever setup he got from the vape store that somewhat worked. It might help if we knew what that was though. I assume this setup used a refillable tank. It might help if you let him try vaping 100% pure PG (no nic, no flavors, just pure PG) and then try 100% pure VG, to see which one of those by itself is the most irritating to him and then reduce that in the DIY juice as much as possible. If you can rebuild coils and have a dripper, using that could be helpful at this point so you don't have to partially fill a tank with pure PG or pure VG. If not then just use whatever tank you have laying around, but you will need to change coils between using the PG and the VG, or just rewick if it's a rebuildable.

So to summarize what it finally took for my wife was removal of her adenoids and using DIY juice made with salts and a bit of WTA (I do not know of any commercial eliquid with salts + WTA). Now she is a few years smoke free.

In her second post she mentioned she already tried 70vg/30pg. Some people can have adverse reactions to PG. When a reaction to PG or VG could be a possibility I always suggest trying each of them 100% pure (no nic, no flavors) just to see which one it is.

ScottP, certainly agree with your opinions on PG / VG. As I did state that in my post. As high PG can really do a number on your your throat and lungs, so that's why common sense says to keep VG reasonably high.

And I definitely agree with your comments on Nic salts and WTA, as these components are not usually present in e liquids. But are present in Tobacco.

If he would just relax and dual use he may come around to vaping exclusively in an organic way the way I did. The first few weeks I would take a couple puffs from a smoke then, put out the cig and pickup my vape. Just gradually lit less cigs and vaped more. MTL didn't work well for me but dl did get me down to 5 smokes a day fairly quick. I started with 24mg freebase, salts weren't a thing yet.

Can you still get hold of eGo/CE4 kits? They are dependably low powered and pretty tight, and you can start with slightly less nic. Cheap enough to be disposable, too. Pods are the modern version, sure, but some of them are quite punchy.

If the vaping thing just doesn't take (it won't for everyone), what about e.g. Snus?

Good luck!

Hope to revisit vape shop for another try
Welcome and glad you joined.
When you are in the vape shop, might ask them if you can test a VG only (no nic) vape at low watts and standard ohms (1.8 ohms or higher). RDA's are perfect to experiment with, the coil and wicks can be changed along with the e liquid used. Could see if your husband can tolerate VG only (can do the experiment for PG only too) for a few vaping sessions. The absence of nic and flavoring may be a solution to the problem. If the cough stops, you may have found the problem and can adjust with experimenting with different types of nic and flavoring.

I coughed on every puff when I started for a good week or more. What made it easier was to bring the vapor into my mouth and hold it there for 5 seconds or so, then inhale. This kind of diluted the intensity and day by day it got easier. After like 3 days I only held it for 3 or 4 seconds and eventually I didnt really need to hold it at all.
