I have been a smoker for about 30 years. At my worst I was up to a pack and a half a day. Before I started E-cigs I was smoking about 3/4ths of a pack a day. I have been vapeing for about a month now and have noticed that I have started to cough more then I have ever coughed while smoking regular cigarettes. Has any one else noticed this about themselves?

I really jumped into this E-cig thing with both feet, I started out with a DSE901 and now own a Janty Stick, a Prodigy, a screwDriver, a Light Vapor and just ordered a GG. I think the coughing is more pronounced when I use one of the heavier hitting E-cigs, I do not experience it much with the 901.

I do take big hits and inhale into the lungs as I did my regular cigs, perhaps this is the cause.

Funny, I was going to post something similar this morning. I quit smoking for 2 months before vaping, and noticed the morning cough and tightness in the chest was almost completely gone.

Now that I've been vaping a couple months, I feel like the cough is coming back. Not as bad as before though and it doesn't hurt when I take a deep breath like before.

I would think it does have some effect on the lungs but in your case I wonder if it is just the normal after-effect of quitting smoking and your lungs are just clearing out all that build up of tar.

PG (and VG) is an irritant. It also has a tendency to dry mucosal tissue. If you're coughing alot, I'd say it's a sign to back off of vaping a little. Everything in moderation. Besides I, like you, have all sorts of equipment and want to use it (all). I have to remind myself to slow down a bit or my throat gets a little sore the next morning.

Do you notice the cough is worse with some liquids but not others? Maybe try a full VG liquid like ECOPure or a mix like Johnson Creek reduced PG. See if the liquid is the cause. Maybe you're sensitive to PG...?

if your using polyfiber for your fillers, that could be the cause too, its very bad to inhale the burnt poly, be safe though, go get an xray.
I like to mouth inhale and taste it bf i suck it into my lungs, you save yourself the dirty hit, and get a little better flavor out of it,

I agree with what other people said earlier, The tar in you lungs from smoking for 30 years is starting to loosen up and come out, i work as an EMT and deal with alot of COPD from smoking, so I know it can take some time, If your able, go for a run or do some form of cardiovascular exercise, you will probably feel like crap immediately but the next day you'll fell better, the point is that it will encourage whatever is in there to come out.

Cutting back on the vaping, and a reduced PG or VG is also a great suggestion!

Hi Kathy,

I have not yet completely quit smoking regular cigarettes yet. But I am down to like only 3 or 4 a day but I do not cough when I smoke them. Since I got my USB pass through for my 901 I have it plugged into my computer at work, and I vape more instead of going outside 3 or 4 times a day and having 1 or 2 cigarettes. There is another post about the drying out of the membranes, but my coughs are wet ones not a dry hack. Maybe I am vaping too much?

Do you mean cough on the inhale or cough when you're not vaping?

If it's when you're just breathing, that's your lungs finally trying to get rid of the build up you've put in there over the past 30 years.

If it's when you're vaping, don't vape as hard!

I cough when I am not vaping but after I am done having just vaped for a while. You could be quite right about my lungs starting to get rid of the crap in there. I will just have to monitor it and see what happens. Thank you for your input.

That's very interesting! I am not really coughing a lot so I am not too worried but still, ya know. I really do not think that it is the liquid because I have many different liquids from several manufacturer's and it seems the same but I will be paying more attention to it now that you have mentioned it. Perhaps I just need to back off of it a bit.

It takes a while, but eventually the coughing will stop, your lungs are trying to heal and expel all the junk you've corroded them with over the years!

I hope that that's what is is rustiangel. I am going to definitely keep an eye on it or should I say an ear.
