That's the way I smoked cigarettes for 33 years so that's what I did the first time I vaped.
I immediately started choking.
It took about a day to get used to it but it's kept me off the real thing for 4 days now.

I tried a friend's 510 with VG and I coughed as well. I think it's just a reaction to a "strange" substance being inhaled.
Smoked for around 7 years before starting vaping. I started vaping about a month ago.
I have a JOYE 510 and the first time I took a drag off it I coughed my ... off. It only took me 1 or 2 days to switch from smoking ultra lights to vaping my 510 no problem. I can now hit it as hard as I please, and the only time I might cough is on multiple-back to back huge drags (like I do when I'm drinking).
I have had a multitude of people try it out since I've gotten it, and the initial results are mixed. I have had people hit it no problem even on some serious drags. I've also had some people take a hit and they cough their ... off right away. Two people in particular (both smokers for a while) said it was harsher than a .... rip (and where both turned off by it - their loss). I would have to concur that seems about right with my first experience with my PV.
I think you have to adjust your technique a little bit and get use to the PG hit. Little do some people realize that when you finally do settle in you might actually want it that harsh.

I don't really cough at all, except for maybe one light one after taking a long drag. But that's only because on the exhale it kinda itches the back of my tongue haha.
I have only been vaping and analog free for 6 days. With VG I can take huge hits with no cough. Sometimes PG makes me cough as soon as it hits the back of my throat. I smoked for 32 yrs., but the last 12 yrs. I had only smoked cigars and pipes. I can "puff" VG and get good vapor (like a pipe), but with PG it seems I have to take a deeper inhale (like cigs). I don't know, I'm kinda new at this. I am just happy to be off tobacco.
He just doesn't know how to hit it. Usually it takes it a bit to figure out how to inhale a new substance or from a new apparatus
I never experienced a coughing problem with analogs after 40 years, and the first 5 days of vaping, I had no problem. Well, I just got my pass thru in the mail today, and I've been using that quite a bit. Guess what? I've started coughing. I think it's due to the higher voltage. I understand my batteries are 3.7 volt and the pass thru is 3.7 - 4.2, but I was told closer to 4.2. I can certainly feel the difference between the battery and the pass thru. I quit using the pass thru about an hour ago and have sucked on the battery operated one a few times, and no more coughing. I think when using the pass thru, I'll either have to cut back on my draw or inhaling, or buy lower nic content juice. I'm using 24 mg now, but considering the extra power of the pass thru, I'll probably be able to get by with 18 mg.
i've been vaping PG and at first it didn't make me cough at all but the more frequently i vaped, the more irritated became my throat, so i got this nasty itchy-scratchy cough which in turn developed into a serious deep cough with phlegm. i've since recovered, of course, but i still can't take as good drags as i'd like to, without having to cough. i guess i should try VG.
They add stuff to cigs to make the smoke less irritating ya know - if they didn't people would hack up a lung jsut like they do when starting to vape. Its perfectly normal - if you don't believe me try standing near a bonfire - if you are smoker - and inhlaing hte smoke it gives off. You'll cough so hard your eyes will water.
update: glad to report that in my case it must have been the nicotine - no more coughing since i switched back to a weaker strength 
apparently 18mg menthol on its own was too much. not surprised as i've always been a light smoker.

Well what a coincidence.
I got a delivery the other day and helped the the guy delivering pull the box out of the truck.
We make our way to the house an i notice the guy is wheezing.
I asked him "so you smoke"? He says "Yeah, 2 packs a day" ...I excitedly explained what vaping was, and convinced the guy to come into the house for a puff.
He really was reluctant since delivery people are not allowed inside houses, but anyway he followed me.
This guy was bulky and muscular ..i would say around 45 years old, with a crew cut.
In the office i show him a prodigy passthrough, which was hooked up to a custom ohm 801 atty @ 8 volts, with a regulated DC power supply.
I explain the difference between a PT and a hand held chuck at 8 volts, as well as show him cupboards filled with different liquids etc.
I tell him to pick up the PT, Press the button and take a deep inhale.
He does just that.
All of a sudden i notice his face go bright red, and he is standing in the middle of my office and starts coughing violently.
He is just standing there, his fist in front of his mouth , and he coughs and coughs...and the more he coughs, the darker red he turns...
I started laughing, but it was a nervous uncontrollable laughter...the guy at this stage is changing dark shades of red, sweating, and spitting as he coughs, trying to say "You F...you fu..." he thinks i'm making fun of him.
The more he coughs the more i laugh...and i end up getting chased around the house by a red faced delivery guy...
He ran to his truck still coughing, and as he was driving away, i still hear him cough in the distance.
Today, i still crack up laughing when i think of his face.

I must say that for the life of me, I do not understand how you can find that funny.
Nice impression of an e-cig you gave. I'm sure you cured him of any desire to give an e-cig an honest try and I'm guessing he has told his friends and family just how great they are. You sure did help save lives that day.
Maybe we vapors could use you as a spokesperson. Or............Maybe the FDA would have a better use for you.
I did not find it funny at all at the time. I was trying to help him understand what vaping was, but I had no idea it would trigger a coughing episode.

It goes to show that not all smokers react positively to vaping...this guy certainly did not react positively.

If I understand correctly you have your equipment set up at 8 volts and it never occurred to you that a person who has never vaped would choke when you tell them to "take a deep breath"?

Many other people have tried and not coughed like this guy...yes with hindsight i still crack up laughing...
I was with people last night who have never vaped and they all tried a chuck on 8 volts, and not one coughed persistently.
The delivery guy smoked 2 packs of Marlboro reds a day, and yet he chocked.
Go figure..
