what is the purpose of a mossfet in an unregulated mod

It decreases the current flow through the switch. Most switches can only handle one amp. The mosfet carries the current and only small switching currents (50 mAmps) flow through the switch. The mosfet keeps the switch from arcing and welding itself into an always on mode.

cool so what you're saying is if I I've got a switch that can handle it I don't need a mosfit right

A suitable mosfet should be lower in resistance compared to a switch. Also most pushbutton switches can only handle around 2-10amps max. If you see one on Ebay from China claiming to be 50amps, don't believe it
