So I received my Vapor King today and it's not exactly what I expected. I've tried a few different flavors, including some bonus carts that were thrown in for free (thanks V4L!!), but they all smell/taste sort of "cigar-y" to me, if that makes sense. I think part of the problem is I was hoping to get the same sort of TH or feeling I get from my menthol cigs, but I don't. Perhaps it's because they're pre-filled? (I've read on here that pre-filled don't taste that good.) Will I taste a significant difference if I fill my own carts? I'm not really loving this "cigar-like" taste. Can anyone relate to this, or am I just weird? lol

Also, I haven't been able to take a single hit without coughing my brains out. Will this eventually stop? It's happening with both 11mg and 18mg carts. I normally smoke Marlboro Menthol lights 100s.

On a positive note, I'm really digging the passthrough. If these carts tasted better and I wasn't hacking a lung every hit, I can totally see myself thoroughly enjoying my PT vaping. :2cool:

Hi redwing. I had the same issues with coughing at first. It wasn't going away and I had to take myself down to 8mg (which doesn't stop my cig cravings) and am now working my way back up. As for being a menthol smoker looking for that TH - try the wow peppermint - and this I can use at 18mg - gonna try 24mg next.

You'll find many threads that will tell you you will not find a juice that tastes like a cigarette. Some are closer than others. Dunhall menthol is pretty good - but that wow peppermint really fills a need.

The wow vanilla is pretty good too.

Hi Redwing, Welcome! This makes me kind of glad that I didn't find this forum until I was 4 months into vaping. We fall all over ourselves here talking about what a great experience vaping is and I'm afraid that we might be getting some peoples expectations up a little too high. Learning to vape may come second nature to some, but for most of us it was a process and often times a frustrating one. Don't get me wrong, I love vaping, I think that it is the best chance I've ever had to keep me off cigarettes for good, but I just want new people to know that it takes some work.

Most menthol liquids I've tried are very mentholy so shop around before you give up. The coughing thing is normal for the first few months - I don't know why it causes coughing but I experienced it also and it went away eventually. Vaping a strong menthol liquid helps soothe your throat though.

A friend of mine tried a hit off of my PV and coughed. I told him to draw on it like a cig and then inhale. It worked for him. Are you drawing on it like a typical analog, or are you trying to inhale as you draw? Another suggestion would be to try some liquids with more VG and less PG. I am no veteran, but I've read countless threads on this topic.

Actually I noticed that I use your method naturally and that when I first started I was doing direct inhales so I think that will work for the OP.

my .02 is that as a first timer , the v4l kit looks good , and i did the same thing. i didnt have much issue with coughin , but when i started vaping , it would sort of take my breath away. i am good at holding back coughs , from my previous smoking experiences , but each person is different. my wife couldnt stand to vape at all , for the first 3 or 4 different companies' eliquids... she would take a hit , and she said it burned her throat and she coughed like crazy.

the juices i went through in order were...

v4l vanilla (bought prefilled cartos and a refiller juice. the cartos were nice , but refilling them was impossible for me , so they all burnt...)

then i got some v4l juice from a buddy and it was just as bad as he said , very chemically... i still have it , and wont touch it. all i taste is alkaline , and it ruins an atty.

after that i bought halo. their newport flavor. it used to be called newpure or something , but i think they had some trademark issues , cause the one i got last time is "truepure" .. i could b mistaken about the name thing , but i love halo. its little harsh after a whole day vaping it , and gives me heartburn by night time , but the flavors and quality is awesome.

then rob from vaporcountry.com sent me some samples for review , they were burley , oriental , mixusa (all 3 are tobacco , and i told him i wasnt sure cause i never tried any tobacco flavors) , then the other two were pina colada and menthol.

the wife had no problem with these at all , and im going to order her a pink ego , and some juice...

the burley was the best tobacco. very rich . the mixusa had a little bit more TH , which i dont care for , i like taste . the oriental was very pungent , but all 3 were vapeable even if the flavors werent perfect. somewhere in testing them , i mixed them , and got a taste that was like beech-nut chew , which was AWESOME. i wish i knew what i mixed to get that flavor , but im out of them now , so...

the pina colada was awesome. i dont drink so i dont know what a real pina colada tastes like , so thats sort of irrelevant , but the 3 or 5ml bottle he sent me , was gone the first day.

the menthol was nice , but i was expecting pure menthol like all the other menthol i have tried. thee was a little darkness to it , that i later asked him about , and he said it had a hint of tobacco there. it was very nice.

keep trying juices , i know it seems like theres soooooo many to try ,and there are , but you gotta get that one or two that you can vape consistently , day in , day out. my next order will be 50ml of pina colada and 50ml of menthol. . .

as a side note i have som vaporbomb i ordered and its nice , but the english toffee is a very rich flavor , a little too much for me , and the rose and zen garden are nice novelty vapes ,but i cant do them all day... they are very nice , no settling needed...

Keep a glass of water next to you, too. Nothing makes the cough worse than a dry throat. Half the time people are starting out they're using filled cartridges, which are usually inferior unless modified IMO, thus they are inhaling "dry vapor' or a dry coil, whatever you want to call it, which will really dry out and irritate your throat even when you're a vet to smoking every leaf on the planet.

You should soon be able to inhale without coughing - I think that is fairly common. It's a different consistency, etc. so it takes a bit to get used to it.

Another vote for Halo here - I like all of their menthols and also recently wound up ordering some Torque 56 after trying a sample. Of the V4L flavors, Smilin' Special Menthol was my old favorite, and I am finding a number of the new WOW flavors like Peppermint, Coffee and Espresso to be quite good.

Day 2 and coughing much less. In fact, hardly at all, so that's definitely a good thing. I'm also starting to actually "taste" the flavors, rather than the icky taste I was getting yesterday. It's very bizarre, because they're the same exact carts. Still having a tough time foregoing my menthol cigs altogether...so I think I'm gonna have to take advantage of today's sale and buy some menthol juice. I'll be considering the suggestions posted in this thread, so thanks everyone! :toast:

Dunhill Menthol & WOW Peppermint are my 2 favorite vapes! So far... I do have a bottle of Atomic Cinnacide on the way so that may change!

@RedWingGirl: Yeah, it takes some getting used to at first. Cowboy Menthol tasted like a burning rubber tire at first. You're used to the taste of smoke, not vapor. Don't worry, it will eventually be the other way around.
