The Dead Rabbits also known as the Black Birds was the media-bestowed name of an Irish American criminal militia gang in New York City, in the 1850s.

Also from the movie "Gangs of New York", because Heathen is also Irish.

There are or were going to be special dead rabbit caps,, one for the butcher gang and of course the other for the dead rabbit gang.

Well regardless of its name's origins (I do have to admit, since the bunnies in the yard are my favorite thing-- they do no damage, they're cute, and they won't venomate you) I kind of hate the name.... But, I'm glad you are enjoying it, Lupinehorror
