This is a story in the Detroit News. I live in Michigan. There is no law about selling ecigs to kids. There is very little Michigan based news about ecigs. The smoking rate in Detroit isn't a little lower than those other cities, it's a LOT lower, crazy lower. It appears that the places with the harshest crackdowns on ecigs have highest teen smoking rates. Washington DC banned vape shops. I believe Texas and Chicago have harsh restrictions. Look at their teen smoking rates.

Percentage of teenage smokers
Baltimore: 7.
Boston: 7.9
Chicago: 10.7
Denver: 11.0
Detroit: 3.4
Houston: 11.3
Las Vegas (Clark County): 7.8
Los Angeles: 6.7
Miami (Miami-Dade County): 7.5
New York: 8.2
Philadelphia: 7.5
San Antonio, TX (Bexar County): 11.3
Washington, D.C.: 15.7

    Just Curious.

How, Exactly, were these Percentages Calculated?

And what "Margin of Error" was assumed when comparing the Statistically Derived Percentiles to the True Population Percentile?

Much the same with gun control - more gun control = higher violent crime rates. More guns = less crime.

The statistics are very interesting and provocative. Perhaps we should get in touch with the reporter and ask for some sources. If this is good stuff maybe it needs to get into the right hands.

I think the Data came from a 2013 CDC Survey? But I could be wrong.

But no matter the Source, if someone doesn't tell you How the Data was Collected, or the Sampling Selection Method, or what Data was Included/Excluded, or how any "Weighting Factors" were applied, or the Assumed Erro of the Results to the True Population, have they Really Told you anything Meaningful?

I'm not Saying that e-Cigarette use has Not Influenced Teen Smoking Rates.

I'm more making a Comment on how the Media likes to throw out Singular Statistics without giving the reader a chance to Evaluate how meaningful they are.

BTW - I read a Statistic once about how an "Overwhelming" Majority of US Citizens did Not Support any Gun Control. I did some digging and found that this Conclusion was based on people Entering and Exiting a Gun Show.

    Go Figure. LOL.

Apparently kid smoking is closely tracked so we should be getting more up-to-date information pretty regularly. I suspect vaping is crushing smoking with kids.

    Link?

Fact is the only poll that means anything is that violent crimes decrease as gun ownership rises. With any mass shooting, the shooting stops when either the person kills themselves or someone with a gun shows up.

    If you say so.

I support the 2nd Amendment. But would rather not see this Thread turn into a Gun Control Thread.

Agree. I only likened the result of laws against vaping with those against gun ownership - which was still on topic and apropos, until someone else wanted to make another point on guns unrelated to the topic.

Two thirds of the City of Detroit has left. The ones that are left work for the city or the casino's.
The welfare rolls of cities like MNPLS/Saint Paul,Madison,Milwaukee and Eau Clare are swelling.
There simply isn't enough people left there with enough money to buy cigarettes nor support
the illicit trade big cities are known for. Everyone's left for greener pastures. Families with children
    have simply bailed.
    Regards
    Mike

I was in Detroit about a year ago. I had more people in Detroit come up to me to ask about my vaping (and where they could get vape gear and juice) than anywhere else. It wasn't teenagers; it was young adults, that 20-25 year range, and every one of them wanted to give vaping that real, honest shot, beyong going to the store and buying Blu, and NJoy, and Vuse e-cigs from the corner store. I was there for about two weeks; the second week, I got into the habit of carrying around a tablet, and showing them web sites like myvaporstore, and my favorite sites for buying juice, including the several companies that are based in Michigan.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I would imagine the rates in Detroit are low because there's no money available to purchase those cigarettes. Has absolutely nothing to do with the availability of e-cigarettes at all. In fact, I'd wager you'd see similar statistics across the board if the survey specified e-cigarettes for ALL residents, with Detroit coming in at the lowest percentage.
