First of all, the last few days I've been all over the vaping in public threads...(SAILORMAN you have great points, but IMO you have to stop taking the bait from these meatheads). Last night my wife and I went to Outback. We had a corner table, but there was another 4 top 3ft away. So, I decided instead of interrupting their meal/conversation, I would hold back. It was clear that they would be leaving soon. When I finished eating they left and I vaped away. They were replaced w 4 people straight from the bar, who couldnt care less. My point is I would have, and normally do, explain a bit to the people around me about what I have, and then proceed to vape away, no matter where I am, and 90% of people dont have a problem, and I would say 75% of people are thirsty for more info.
So, how do you handle that situation? I never ask mgmt, I always put the question to the people in my general vicinity, as it is them, I feel, that will or will not take issue with it.

Then we headed to a movie. The theater was packed. We were forced to sit dead center, except in front of us was the 8"wide aisle, then the lower half of the seating area. I immediately noticed directly behind us was a couple and the woman was either 9 months preg or she had like 4 babies in her. So, before we even sat I said "hello, when you see me exhaling be aware that it is not smoke", and before I could even explain they both were like "oh no problem, go right ahead". So, again, I feel had I asked mgmt b4 entering it would of been a blanket "no way",( I assume). For 2+ hrs I sat and vaped, stealthly to some degree. I wasnt sitting there blowing clouds of vapor up for the whole world to clearly see in a dark screen room. But, on the same note, it was clear to many behind us what I was doing. Nobody said a word. Including theater staff whom entered several times to shut up unruly kids.
So, again, do you come right out and ask ahead of time, or do you take my approach?

For whats its worth... Every chance I get I approach a group, or even 1 person smoking and ask them if they are interested in quitting, and proceed to tell them how I went from 2+ PAD to all vape, and here is where to start for more info. (ECF of course)
I firmly believe in seperating ourselves from the smokers. Whats your take on my evening? How, if at all, would you of done it differently?

The way i discovered vaping...I was in the hospital about 6 weeks ago (nothing major but was going to be there for a week).
The Staff offered me nic patches, but that same day my girlfriend brought me an ecig for the tobacco shop.
I asked the staff and let them read the lit that came with it. Any way, I was allowed to vape all week while i was there.

I spent 4+hrs in the hosp a week or so ago for pre-op testing. Long story short, I vaped the whole time, including in a small room w 4 nurses for an hour while they used me as a pin cushion to get blood. I'm going to be there for at least 5 days next month and the only part I'm feeling pretty good about is that it appears I'll be able to vape.
BTW, I love your restaurants, but their a bit on the pricey side;)

I'd have handled it pretty much exactly the same way. I would have made sure my vapor didn't get between the screen and the audience, but I definitely have had no problems vaping in a theater. In fact, before I found e-cigs, I hadn't been to a real movie theater since they banned indoor smoking. How many years ago was that? The closest I ever came was one trip to a Cinema-and-Brew that allowed smoking. The movie? Jurassic Park. I'm not sure, but I think some people here may not have have even been born then.

I don't ever ask management, I just start out kind of "lightly" and see how it goes. I also use a ego with a big battery that looks nothing like a cigarette, and will take a few puffs and then set it down. People can clearly see it is not smoking.

If I feel a comfortable "vibe", I'll vape freely. If the atmosphere feels weird, I just lay off it.

This seems to work for me. I vape in public all the time and no one has ever asked me to stop, but sometimes if it "feels weird", I stop myself. If that makes any sense.

i just try to feel out the vibe of wherever i am before i publicly vape, and i usually start off with a few discreet puffs. i generally find when i try to get a stranger's attention i'm usually ignored, so i haven't had the balls to give the "when you see what i'm doing, don't freak out" speech. likewise, i haven't had anyone give a crap about what i'm doing. i really don't wanna pull any superficial cards here, but strangers don't seem to often have a very high opinion of me. upon first glance i appear younger than my actual age and i have an "alternative" appearance. most people assume i'm younger than i am, and that i may be some type of rogue. they're usually surprised when i'm educated, well spoken, etc and when i'm usually trying to get a stranger's attention more often than not they usually think i'm bothering them for some sort of personal gain rather than just talking to my neighbors. i have a feeling our 'older' and more conservative members may have an easier time with this approach. which is really lame that i have this opinion, but this is gauged from responses in my area.
the few times i have asked management i got the "why are you asking me this?" type of reaction. in my place of work (bar/venue), that's exactly what my manager asked, though she was really happy i had asked first. the way she and other bouners explain it since there is no specific legal prohibition against vaping, they "have to" allow patrons to vape, lest they get a stick up their rear end and leave.
in the case of a dinner though, i would stealth a few puffs then clear it with my waitress. i've stealthed in a movie theatre before, but who exactly do i ask? it's a pain to drag out a manager, and any of the kids working will probably just outright say no to be safe.
i've absentmindedly vaped in a few public places, and it's been met with amusement so far.

You wouldn't, by chance, have a dragon tattoo on your back, would you? :)

Sorry for the possibly obscure reference. Your description of yourself immediately reminded me of Lisbeth Salander from "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", a book and movie trilogy I've been into lately. Highly recommended.

I agree minus the movie theater. For me with that, I feel like the vapor obstructs others ability to view the movie. I wouldn't smoke in the theater. IMO

If you see the movie, watch the Swedish subtitled version. The American remake has a cooler soundtrack, but the characters are not as good.

Hence 3/4 of the way down the 2nd paragraph where I said I wasnt exhaling clouds of vapor, I was kind of keeping it stealth. That was out of respect not fear of getting caught.
