I went to the dentist last week and mentioned that I vape and her assistant said that electronic cigarettes are worse than normal cigarettes.
This concerned me because smoking damages teeth more than almost anything else can so hearing a dentist or their assistant warding people off e-cigs on account of misinformation that they are worse than cigarettes was very troubling.
I asked her what the source was of her belief about the damage caused by e-cigs and I quickly ascertained she was referring to popcorn lung caused by diketones even though she couldn't remember where she read it.
I had to advise her that diketones were a concern and vendors have moved quickly to have their liquids tested for diketones and removed or greatly reduced diketones by altering the mixtures of their liquids.
The second point I made was that diketones are but one harmful chemical in e-juice and perhaps the most harmful one and yet, it can't compared to the 400 main chemicals in cigarettes with 60 of them being known carcinogens.
There is still widespread misguidance and disinformation out there about e-liquids and that includes health professionals like dentists !
