Hi all,

Picked up a kayfun 3.1 this week, one of the well made clones. I have been reading that it delivers all of the same flavor quality as the Taifun, which I highly enjoy. But after about 3+ hours playing with different builds last night, I can't come close to the flavor profile I'm getting with the Taifun. I tried a cotton build, got plenty of vapor but weak taste. Then I tried the "traditional" silica/ ekowool build and got a *little* more flavor with very weak vapor. But again, neither build came close to the Taifun. With the cotton, I tried a third build by laying the moistened cotton down along the juice "grooves", that wasn't much better and I got some leakage. coils used were standard 28 ga., between 1.2 ant 1.8 ohms. I'm not a "cloud chaser" and don't like the "hot" builds with microcoils, sub-ohms, etc. I like a nice cool "smoke". The Kayfun appears to be very finnicky about build, and one can get totally confused watching all the different builds on YouTube!
What is the "definitive" build, (in your opinion), of the most flavorful build that would compete favorably with the Taifun? I want the next one to be the "right" one...

Thanks to all in EFC! It has been a great support aid for me in finally getting away from a terrible out of control habit!

Can't speak for the Taifun, but I've really enjoyed the following:
Microcoil: 28g 10 to 12 wraps @ 5/64" which gives me the option to easily post wick with cotton or 2mm silica. This comes out to around 2ish Ohms. I use battery regulators...so I tune it for around 8 or 9 watts (just hot enough to work well and not have much lag time heating up all that wire) and close down the air flow for a draw that's a slight bit more open than a typical 510 dripping atty. I just mount the coil horizontally across the air hole (tried the vertical type as well..but that was harder to wick and vaped about the same). I like a moderate throat hit, so I keep the coil only a few mm over the air intake in the center (if you want more TH, set the coil higher).

Do give a microcoil a shot...winding on a jig makes it easy to wick and rewick as needed. It also makes it easy to insure the coils heat evenly, from the inside outward, and that you don't get 'hot spots' which aren't properly wicked.

Remember, the Kayfun can open up to have a LOT of air flow. Adjusting that air flow can really effect flavor. So try some variance on your draw settings....

Also, don't be afraid to try 'flavor wicks'. A bit of cotton loosely laid over the build in a way that it allows air from the draw passes over or through it, it can stay wet, not really supply much if any liquid to the coil itself...that can let more of the liquid's raw/un-vaped flavor pass through and extend into the draw. Flavor wicks can be fiddled with to get interesting results...and of course...not all flavors will benefit...but it doesn't hurt anything to try :)

Thanks Credo,
I am believing that for what I'm looking for, a higher impedence coil (1.8 ohms or so) is indeed the way to go.
I did once use the "flavor wick" successfully, just pumped an extra watt or so to get more vapor production. I will try that again. I have definitely been enjoying cotton more then any other material, the only difference being more frequent changes. I guess my remaining question is the technical *method* of the build- Are you pulling the two "tails" of the wicking material through the chimney tube and then pushing them back down alongside the coil or are there any better tricks or tips?
Thanks!

At first I made the wicks far too long and pulled them up, screwed on the lower chimney, snipped, then tucked.

Here lately I've been wetting it down and clipping it first, then putting it all back together.

I've found that the biggest thing leading to leaks out of the air hole at the bottom of the 3.1 version is having too much wick. All you need is for it to be long enough to grab some liquid. Have it lay 'beside' the liquid channels, maybe partially covered, but not 'clogged' or totally covered, as you want excess liquid to go back into the tank at the end of the draw...not overflow and go down the air hole.

So, if you get liquid coming out of the air hole...it's flooding in more liquid than the wicks can absorb, and the excess can't just drop back into the tank...maybe try less wick and make sure they aren't 'clogging' the liquid channels. You want liquid that isn't absorbed into the wick to go back down into the tank at the end of your draw.

Ok,
Got the "textbook" standard build; coil running at 1.67 ohms, which I think is in the "sweet spot" for the Taifun. loosely packed put firmly fitting cotton in the coil, which sits a touch over 1mm directly above the air hole. I carefully tucked the cotton tails beside the coil where the liquid channels are. The bottom of the deck is abouty 85-90% covered. I put a very small, loose, fluffy piece of cotton over the coil for a "flavor wick".
It is better; but still quite a distance in flavor and vapor production compared to the Taifun. I have to take very deep pulls to get good vapor, and the flavor is definitely muted in comparison. I'm not sure if I'm still missing something?

i use the EHPro 3.1 and pull the wick and snip then tuck moisten them up and finish putting it together at 1.6-1.8 ohms and man the flavor and vape is just killer along with the custards or the Neckbeards Nectar juice = hours of vaping bliss ...enjoy

I've been doing exactly this lately and it is definitely much better. Also, too much wick- especially w/ cotton, is definitely a potential problem. But I've been quite happy with it lately. Thanks all.
