i have gone there. i have signed up. i read the report the article is based on. the report mentions that it 'may' be attractive to children. and from that point on i have been in a minor rage. every time i start writing something, i end on a ranting tangent that has nothing to do with harm reduction of the specific products.

mind throwing some 'always eloquent' words my way? and i will see if i can do it better. :D

Note: There are 4 different ads, with different text for each one. I left the comment below on page 4 (Dissolvable Tobacco Product Second Advertising Example - News Story - WSOC Charlotte)

Am I supposed to believe that this ad is aimed at children? It clearly states that to take advantage of the offer you must buy another RJRT tobacco product. Obviously the ad is aimed at current tobacco users. The research showed the packages to children in an artificial situation--grouped with candy packages. In the real world, tobacco products are grouped together and candy products are grouped together in stores, and tobacco products are kept out of the reach of children.

I have an idea about a new strategy to use when people start with this "it might appeal to children" nonsense.

Ask them why they believe it's OK to forcibly addict young children to psychotropic medications like Ritalin and Prozac which have a know history of causing deaths due to adverse reactions and also suicides but react in horror at the idea that a child "might" become addicted to nicotine.

not to mention why is it ok to make alcoholic beverages like hard lemonade and Smirnoff Ice? those are aimed at teenagers and everybody %&#$ing knows it! hell, I work at a grocery store, and at least for a while, you could buy a bottle of baileys right next to the candy and ice cream toppings! why is it ok to sell things that are clearly made for consuming certain illegal substances and pass them off as being "for incense" right at stores in the mall that are OBVIOUSLY made to be catering to teenagers? why is it ok to put magazines like cosmopolitan that encourage sexual behavior right at the FRONT CHECKOUT next to Time and Newsweek? I'm usually pretty liberal when it comes to that kind of thing, but I mean come on, for the sake of common decency put that stuff in the back by where the main magazine rack is! what the hell? seriously there just so much crap that's considered acceptable that I think is just as bad.

And the irony in all this is that nicotine can be just as effective as these drugs for controlling the same symptoms.

but!? .... but?! .... how can an expensive patent-protected, barely-effective, side-effect-laden, laboratory-created pharmaceutical product compete with a safe, effective, cheap botanical extract?

I mean - Really! People might start thinking they should be allowed to grow this stuff in their back yard.

wait is it illegal to grow your own tobacco or something? please elaborate on this!

Not yet. But would you put it past them to make it so if they can?

I mean, it is already illegal to grow a different plant that has medicinal qualities such as preventing glaucoma, treating nausea, and increasing appetite.

You don't mean...... that plant. It's been decades but I still have fond memories. I can attest to the last benefit.

Unfortunately, that's an effect I don't need at this point in life. Find me something that effectivfely decreases appetite!

Look for a free documentary called Run From The Cure if you really want to get ....... When concentrated into an oil, the active ingredient in that plant also causes mutated cells to secrete a fatty acid that makes them cannibalistic. Hundreds of people have cured their own CANCER by dosing a half grain of rice over a 60-90 day period.

I too am tired of the 'what about the children' argument. Is there no liability and responsibility in parenting anymore??!

I feel as if I have awakened in the middle of a science fiction story. You know the one, where someone has invented a cheap safe source of energy that can power every home and every automobile, and the corporations that stand to lose big time are all out to kill that person and quash the information on how to build the home generators.

The trouble is that even though I am paranoid, I think "they" are out to get us. It's the only explanation that makes any sense.

They aren't out to get us as such, they're out to get our money. They don't give two hoots about us one way or the other, down to whether we live or die and, if we live, what conditions we live under. Thus it has always been, and thus it will always be.
