So, I recently ordered a roll of 30 gauge Kanthal and started building my own replacement coils for Kanger T3S, and ProTanks. I used the 4-40 machine screw method, and they came out great. So I started browsing the forum and became interested in the ProTank 3, which boasts a dual coil atomizer. Then I thought, "why can't I BUiLD one of those?". So, I did, and it works amazing.

First thing, start with a paperclip. I Wrapped the Kanthal 10 times around it as tight as I could.

I then pressed the two sides of the coil together using my thumbs in order to compact the coil, because space is something you don't have in one of these heads. Once it's nice and tight, slide it right off of the paperclip. You should end up with something like this.

now make your second coil IDENTICAL to the first. This is very important in order for the dual-coil to heat evenly.

now it's time to wick these micro-coils. I use one of these.

its an organic cotton safety swab. There is more than enough cotton on one end to make up TWO of these set ups, and it wicks perfectly with no weird taste. Just gently pull it apart until you get what you need. This takes a little bit of finagling, but becomes easier over time. Now roll one end of the cotton to a point small enough to fit through the coil.

Once you get enough through, gently pull some more cotton through the coil until you get a snug fit on both sides. This may take some twisting and rolling, but as long as your piece of cotton is not too thick, it should work.

Now repeat the process for coil #2. Don't trim the wicks yet as they will help you to position them in the head.

now take the two completed micro coils and insert the wire ends through the head. Should look something like this.

Now reinsert your rubber grommet passing either the two left or two right lead wires through the center, and leaving the two opposite wires wedged in between the rubber and the chassis.(sorry no pics for this portion). I find it easiest to make sure the negative wire leads end on the opposite side of the grommet as the positive leads do, this will help to alleviate a short circuit. Now insert the positive metal post, and trim the lead as close as possible. Be sure to tuck any excess wire in as flush as you can. The finished head, after adjusting the coils.

i also add a small lightly rolled piece of cotton on top of the coils (flavor wick). I think this helps with leaks, and also adds some juice to the hottest part of the coils. Once the head is reassembled, I check the resistance. I read .7-.8 ohms on this particular rebuild. At 4.2 volts that's 22 watts! I am extremely happy with the way this thing vapes now, trippling my power and doubling my surface area all in one shot. Please give it a try and let me know what you think. If any advice is needed, I'd be more than happy to help.

Can I do this with the protank2 or is there just not enough room?

I have personally only done this with the T3S and original Protank. I've never tried a Protank 2, so not sure if it uses the same size atomizer head. If it does then absolutely. Good Luck!

Yes there is the same amount of room in T3S as PT2.
 Thank you Dpb for the great idea.
I just did a MT3S at 1.1 ohms slapped it on my MPV2 at 9.5 Watts and this thing hits like a champ!
I'll do my PT2s & T3S dual when they need a new coil or wick.

Thanks I was looking for just this, though for single coil Evod. Just wrapped 10 around a paperclip, put the coil together and after some time was able to get the little piece of cotton through. Showed 2.3 ohms and can't wait to have the girl try this on her Evod. Now only if I could take apart the BCC coil. The chimney seems impossible to take off.

My hands are too big and clumsy to try this with a dual!!

I got a little carried away and did a triple coil.
Bad news is it came out at 0.7 ohms and my MVP2 needs at least 0.8 ohms :(

I haven't tried a triple yet, but I am curious how many wraps and what kind of wire you used. Seems very difficult to get the double into one of these heads, so he triple must be insane. If you could post any pics or advice, that would be great.

Glad I could inspire someone! I myself am I firm believer in cheaper is better, and making your own heads is very cost effective. I have been impressed at the improvements to the T3s and Protank since building the dual. Also try out the vertical coil build.

I did a side by side double with the 3rd above. Twisted the 3 wires on each side together the inserted into coil holder. Ten wraps of I think 32 (I didn't by it, got it with an AGA T2 I won). I have to try it again with more wraps so I can actually use it since I need at least 0.8 ohms.

Don't mean this to sound silly but what size paper clip is that? The big ones or the standard ones? (Big difference is the thickness of the wire the paper clip is made out of.) Looks like it was a large paper clip.
Standard size. Not extra large or anything, but not the mini. Pretty sure with the smaller one you would have an extremely hard time getting enough wick through. Think I'll try this next time with smaller gauge wire. Hits awesome but tends to burn up in a couple days.

I'm not as wild as some with the dual coils in my protank. My first go was 10 wraps of 30 guage on a .8mm allen key and ended up with .6 ohm microcoil. It fired nice but got too hot and all I vaped was burning taste. I don't think the protank can bring in enough air to satisfy a hungry subohm dual microcoil. 2nd go was 7 wraps 32 guage on the same .8mm allen key and ended up with 1.0 ohm. That one fired nice and still have it sitting on the desk. 3rd attempt was 9 wraps 34 guage and ended up with 1.5 ohm dual microcoil, something that would fire with a regulated mod. It isn't easy to stuff 2 coils into a protank head but I can say I did it and it works good, now really going through the juice but having a great vape to go with it. I found 2 pins that nicely laid side by side in the groove of the head and used those to get the 4 legs set inplace and then used the allen key adjusting the height and tightning of each coil individually by pulling the legs, then centered them nicely and twisted my hemp fiber into the coils.
Its a bit of work but I'll see in the next couple days how it fairs and how much of a juice hog dual microcoils really are.

Since 5pm yesterday and 7pm today, with 7 hours of sleep and a workday. I find this 1.5 ohm dual hemp microcoil is really nice. I get huge hits off my kicked smok bolt with the watts almost turned to max, but at a price. I knew that I would be goin through the juice like mad, this one is my 6th fill of my 4ml sigelei puritank but I didn't realize how fast the dual microcoils can go through batteries. I've gone through 5 of my 18500's in the same time period as for 2 batteries when I'm just using regular 5 wrap coils. I'm enjoying this build but its too expensive and hard on my batteries but a fun experiment.

I agree with you 100%. The dual-coil is a fun project. And as a vape hobbyist, it feels good to have it under your belt. My latest project has been a 10 wrap on a 5/64 drill bit with 30 gauge Kanthal micro coil (I got 2.4ohm). Credit goes to RiPTrippers for his awesome YouTube tutorial on how to design these and properly torch them. I'm not posting a link, but just type in micro coil Protank rebuild and it will come up. The other major improvement , was to drill out the air holes in the base of the T3S with a 1/16th inch bit. Whoa! With the new micro coil wicked with cotton, the larger bore air holes, and vaping at 15 Watts, I seriously almost blew my head off. As I sat in a thick cloud of strawberry and cream vapor, I felt I had finally reached the peak as far as the Kanger T3S is concerned. Easy to build, easy to rewick, and insane vapor production with awesome TH.
Whatever you end up doing, enjoy!
